Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

"If Your Honor will direct your attention to tab three," Arthur Vance's voice echoed with terrifying precision through the quiet courtroom. "You will see a series of encrypted wire transfers executed from Mr. Hayes's personal corporate terminal over the past twelve months. A total of 4.2 million dollars was systematically moved from Hayes Enterprises into an offshore account in Grand Cayman under the name 'C. Vance Holdings.' This occurred while my client was told the family could not afford her independent health insurance policy post-pregnancy."

Judge Monroe's brow furrowed deep as her eyes scanned the certified bank logs. "Mr. Sterling, are these records accurate?"

Sterling was frantically flipping through his own notes, his face turning an uncomfortably dark shade of red. He leaned down, gripping Trevor's shoulder. "Trevor, what the hell is this? You told me your offshore accounts were completely clean."

"They... they are separate!" Trevor stammered, his polished composure cracking, a bead of sweat breaking out along his hairline. "Your Honor, my wife had no authorization to access these servers. This is hacked data! It's inadmissible!"

"Mr. Hayes, you would do well to remember that you are in a court of law, not a boardroom," Judge Monroe warned, her voice dripping with an icy authority. "Mr. Vance, continue."

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Arthur said, turning a page in his own file. "Tab five contains the internal gate receipts from the Hayes Charitable Gala from 2024 through last month. These documents, which were saved directly from the family’s residential administration server, reveal a dual-accounting system. Over two million dollars in charitable donations intended for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital were diverted into a private construction account used to purchase a luxury penthouse in Paradise Valley—currently occupied by Mr. Hayes's associate, Chloe Vance."

In the gallery, Diane Hayes let out a sharp, audible gasp. She stood up, her expensive pearl necklace shaking against her throat. "This is an absolute lie! That girl is a common accountant! She’s fabricating these numbers to ruin our family!"

Bang!

Judge Monroe brought her gavel down with tremendous force. "Ma'am, sit down and remain silent, or I will have the bailiff place you in holding for contempt of court immediately!"

Diane sank back into her seat, her face completely pale, her immaculate hands trembling as she reached for her designer purse.

Judge Monroe looked down at Trevor, her expression one of utter disgust. "Mr. Hayes, you have submitted a document to this court under penalty of perjury that appears to omit over six million dollars in active liquid assets, alongside potential evidence of federal tax evasion and charitable fraud. This court is denying your request for emergency custody. Temporary physical and legal custody of Leo Hayes will remain exclusively with the mother, Naomi Fletcher."

Trevor choked on his breath, his hands gripping the edge of the table. "Your Honor, please—"

"I am not finished, Mr. Hayes," Judge Monroe cut him off. "I am ordering an immediate freeze on all corporate and personal bank accounts associated with Hayes Enterprises, Apex Meridian, and the Hayes Family Trust pending a full court-appointed forensic investigation. Furthermore, I am ordering you to pay emergency interim child support and spousal maintenance in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars per month, effective today. And finally, I am referring these financial exhibits directly to the Arizona Department of Revenue and the internal affairs division of the IRS."

As the judge banged her gavel to adjourn the hearing, Trevor fell back into his chair as if he had been struck by a physical blow. He turned his head slowly to look at Naomi.

Naomi stood up, smoothly buttoning her navy coat. For the first time that morning, she looked directly into his eyes. She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply gave him the same cool, unbothered look he had given her at 4:30 in the morning when he told her she was leaving with nothing.

The hunter had officially become the prey.
