Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Dr. Vance

Six months later—July 4th.

The summer sun shone brightly over the sparkling waters of the lake. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the towering oak trees surrounding Ethan’s newly renovated lake house—a peaceful, beautiful retreat located three miles away from the old family property.

The deck was filled with the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and acoustic guitar music playing softly from speakers mounted near the water.

Colton, now seven years old and completely healthy, was running across the lush green lawn, wearing a tiny pair of orange water wings, playing tag with his younger cousins.

"Slow down, buddy!" Mark called out from the grill, holding a pair of tongs.

Mark walked with a slight, barely noticeable limp, but he was fully mobile, healthy, and smiling broadly as he flipped steaks over the smoking wood coals.

Sarah sat at a patio table nearby, chatting warmly with Ethan, who was pouring glasses of ice-cold lemonade for the guests.

At the edge of the long wooden dock, sitting with her feet dangling over the cool, clear water, sat Dr. Piper Vance.

She wore a simple white linen sundress, her sunglasses resting on top of her head, holding a glass of iced tea. She watched the sparkling sunlight reflect off the lake, feeling a deep, untouchable peace settling over her soul.

A soft step sounded on the dock boards behind her.

Mark walked down the dock, carrying two plates of food. He sat down beside her, dipping his feet into the water alongside hers.

"Steak is medium-rare, just how you like it," Mark said, handing her a plate.

"Thanks, Mark," Piper smiled, taking a bite. "It's perfect."

They sat in comfortable, easy silence for a long moment, watching Colton laugh as he splashed water near the shore under Ethan’s watchful eye.

"Two years ago today," Mark said quietly, his eyes fixed on the lake. "Two years ago today, I stood on a deck just like this one and called you a fake nurse."

Piper turned her head to look at him.

Mark looked back, his eyes filled with endless gratitude, humility, and love.

"I spent half my life believing that being successful meant having the biggest house, the loudest voice, and the most expensive car," Mark murmured. "It took watching my son almost die, and almost losing my own leg, to realize what real strength looks like."

He reached out, placing his large, calloused hand gently over hers.

"You saved my son, Piper. You saved me. You saved this family from destroying itself," Mark said, his voice trembling with emotion. "I am so damn proud to be your brother. So proud to tell anyone who will listen that my sister is Dr. Piper Vance."

Piper felt a soft, warm tear slip down her cheek, but a radiant smile broke across her face.

"Thanks, Mark," she whispered, squeezing his hand tightly. "That means a lot."

"Hey! Aunt Piper! Uncle Mark!" Colton shouted from the shore, waving his arms wildly in the air. "Come in the water! The water is awesome!"

Piper laughed—a rich, bright sound that echoed across the quiet, sunlit lake.

She stood up on the wooden dock, unbuttoned her white linen shirt, and tossed it onto a bench.

"Last one in buys dessert!" Piper shouted, taking a running leap off the edge of the dock and diving cleanly into the cool, crystal-clear water.

She sliced through the surface, emerging into the bright summer sunlight, surrounded by the laughter of the people who loved her, completely free, completely whole, and forever standing in the light she had earned.
