Chapter 3 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE SUITE

At 1:00 AM, my phone buzzed violently on the nightstand of my hotel room at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.
I sat up in bed, looking at the caller ID: MOM.
I took a slow breath, slid the screen, and placed it on speaker.
"How could you?!" my mother’s voice shrieked through the speaker before I could even say hello. "How could you ruin your sister's rehearsal dinner like that?!"
I leaned back against the headboard, remarkably calm. "I ruined it? Mom, Lauren explicitly forced me to share my nickname in front of thirty people to embarrass me."
"She was just teasing you!" Mom cried hysterically. "She’s your sister! It was a playful family joke! You could have just made up some silly story! Instead, you let Mark's uncle humiliate her in front of his entire family!"
"I didn't say anything other than the word 'Riptide,' Mom," I reminded her coldly. "Admiral Miller was the one who explained what it meant. And if you think risking my life to save fourteen people is something to lie about so Lauren can feel superior, you've completely lost your mind."
"Mark's parents are threatening to call off the wedding, Chloe!" Mom sobbed. "Richard Miller called an emergency family meeting in the hotel lounge at midnight! They are questioning Lauren’s character! They’re saying she’s cruel and petty!"
"She is cruel and petty, Mom," I said flatly. "She’s been picking on me since we were kids, and you and Dad have spent twenty years enabling her because she wanted to marry rich."
"You self-centered bitch!" a sharp voice screamed from the background.
It was Lauren. She snatched the phone from Mom.
"You ruined my life!" Lauren yelled, her voice hoarse from crying. "Mark isn't talking to me! He's staying in his brother's room! His father told him that if he marries me tomorrow without a ironclad prenuptial agreement, he’s cutting him off from the family firm!"
"Sounds like Mark's father is a smart man," I replied smoothly.
"I hate you!" Lauren screamed. "Don't you dare show up at my wedding tomorrow! Do you hear me?! You are banned from the ceremony!"
"Lauren, don't worry," I smiled quietly into the dark room. "I had zero intention of watching you walk down the aisle anyway."
I hung up the phone and set it on do-not-disturb.
Twenty minutes later, a soft knock came at my hotel room door.
I put on my robe, walked to the door, and looked through the peephole. Standing in the hallway, looking completely exhausted and wearing a rumpled suit, was Mark.
I unlocked the door and opened it three inches. "Mark? What are you doing here?"
Mark looked at me, his eyes filled with profound regret and embarrassment. "Chloe... can I talk to you for five minutes? Please?"
I hesitated, then stepped back, opening the door. "Five minutes, Mark."
He stepped into the room, running a hand through his messy hair. He looked around the quiet suite, then turned to face me.
"I am so sorry, Chloe," Mark said, his voice raw. "For everything. For sitting there tonight while Lauren tried to humiliate you. For the last two years of listening to her talk down about you."
"Why didn't you ever stop her, Mark?" I asked gently, crossing my arms. "You knew she was being mean."
"Because... because I thought it was just sibling rivalry," Mark confessed, bowing his head in shame. "I thought you two were just competitive. But tonight... when my uncle stood up, and I saw the look on Lauren's face... I realized it wasn't rivalry. She genuinely enjoys tearing you down."
"It's who she is, Mark," I said softly. "She measures her value by making sure everyone around her feels smaller than her."
Mark pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and looked at it. "My father gave me an ultimatum tonight. He said I either postpone the wedding and get a full prenup, or I leave the family business. But honestly... after seeing how she treated you tonight, I don't even know if I know who Lauren really is."
"That's a decision you have to make for yourself, Mark," I told him. "Not for your dad, and not because of me."
Mark looked at me for a long moment, awe returning to his eyes. "Riptide... Uncle Howard told me what that mission was like. You really saved those sailors?"
May you like
"I did my job, Mark," I said quietly. "Now go back to your room and figure out what your job is."
He nodded slowly, turned, and walked out into the corridor.
