Chapter 6 - THE BREAKING POINT

"WHAT IS THIS?!" Lauren screamed, her voice piercing through the applause like a siren.
She shoved her way through the crowd of tuxedo-clad guests, holding her massive lace train in one hand, her face contorted in absolute rage.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" she yelled at me, stopping two feet away. "YOU BROUGHT MEDALS TO MY WEDDING DAY?! ARE YOU CRAZY?!"
My mother rushed down the stairs to stop her. "Lauren, calm down—"
"NO, MOM! LOOK AT HER!" Lauren shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at my medal. "She couldn't let me have ONE DAY! Just ONE DAY where the attention was on me! She dressed up! She brought soldiers! She paid people to applaud for her!"
Mark stepped forward, his face dark with anger. "Lauren, stop talking right now. You are making an absolute fool of yourself."
"I am making a fool of myself?!" Lauren turned on Mark, her veil flying wildly. "Your family forced me to sign a prenup an hour ago that says I get nothing if we divorce! Your uncle humiliated me last night! And now your whole family is surrounding MY sister like she's some kind of hero!"
"She IS a hero, Lauren!" Mark shouted back, his patience completely exhausted. "She saved fourteen lives! You can't even refrain from being cruel to her for twenty-four hours!"
"She's lying!" Lauren screamed hysterically, turning back to the guests. "She was a clerk! She sat behind a desk! Show them the proof, Chloe! Show them!"
Admiral Howard Miller stepped between Lauren and me, his four-star shoulders blocking her view of my face. His tone was as cold as the Arctic Ocean.
"Young lady," Howard said, "if you speak one more disrespectful word to a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, I will have federal marshals escort you off this hotel property for harassment of a military officer."
Lauren blinked, her jaw dropping. "You... you can't do that!"
"Try me," Howard said smoothly.
Richard Miller walked over to his son, placing a heavy hand on Mark’s shoulder. "Mark. The church cars are waiting outside. You need to make a final decision right now. Is this the woman you want representing our family for the rest of your life?"
The lobby went completely quiet again. Everyone looked at Mark.
Lauren’s rage suddenly turned into panic. She realized she had pushed too far. She turned to Mark, her eyes wide, tears ruining her expensive wedding makeup.
"Mark... honey," she whimpered, stepping toward him, her voice fake and desperate. "Please... I'm just stressed. It's my wedding day. You know how much work I put into this... please..."
Mark looked at Lauren. He looked at her white dress, her manicured nails, her smear of mascara.
Then he looked over at me, standing tall with my Distinguished Service Cross, completely calm, holding myself with quiet dignity.
Mark took a slow breath, reached down, and pulled his white boutonnière flower off the lapel of his tuxedo.

He dropped the flower onto the marble floor at Lauren’s feet.
"The wedding is off, Lauren," Mark said quietly.
