Chapter 5 - THE CITATION

Beside Admiral Miller stood two active-duty Navy officers in pristine dress uniforms, one of them carrying a velvet-lined wooden display box.

My father instinctively stepped back, intimidated by the sheer presence of the four-star admiral.

Howard walked straight up to me, stopping three feet away. He didn't look at my father, nor at the wedding guests gathering around us. His focus was entirely on me.

"Commander Chloe Vance," Howard announced, his voice echoing through the grand marble lobby of the hotel. "By direction of the Secretary of the Navy and the President of the United States, I have the distinct privilege of presenting you with the official documentation for the Navy Distinguished Service Cross."

Gasps rippled through the crowd of wedding guests.

Mark’s father, Richard, stepped out from the lounge, his eyes wide. Mark was standing beside him, wearing his tuxedo, staring at me in absolute shock.

The young Navy officer beside Howard opened the wooden box, revealing a stunning bronze cross suspended from a blue and white ribbon.

Howard pulled a formal parchment document from his folder and began reading aloud, his voice rich and powerful:

"For extraordinary heroism in action against hostile forces while serving as Team Leader, Special Warfare Task Group, during Operation Riptide on October 14, 2023. Commander Vance displayed exceptional valor, tactical brilliance, and total disregard for her personal safety when entering a heavily fortified enemy stronghold under extreme weather conditions. Her decisive actions resulted in the elimination of seven hostile combatants and the successful rescue of fourteen American citizens without friendly casualties. Commander Vance’s extraordinary leadership and selfless devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon herself and the United States Naval Service."

Howard set the paper down, took the bronze medal from the box, and pinned it carefully to the lapel of my navy jacket.

He stepped back and rendered a crisp, sharp salute. "Thank you for your service, Commander."

I snapped to attention, returning the salute perfectly. "Thank you, Admiral."

The lobby erupted into spontaneous applause!

Mark’s family, the hotel staff, and even complete strangers who were checking in began clapping enthusiastically. Richard Miller walked forward, shaking my hand vigorously with deep respect.

"Incredible, Commander," Richard said loudly. "Simply incredible. We are honored to have you in our presence."

Standing by the fountain, my father looked like he had been struck by lightning. My mother, who had just come down the stairs to check on the commotion, stood paralyzed on the steps, staring at the glittering bronze medal on my chest.

And right at that exact moment, the elevator doors opened.

Lauren stepped out, wearing her white wedding gown, full veil, and heavy makeup.

She froze.

She saw the crowd of wealthy guests cheering. She saw the four-star Admiral standing beside me. She saw the glittering Distinguished Service Cross pinned to my suit.

She saw that the attention, the honor, and the awe of her entire wedding day had completely shifted away from her.

And then, she snapped.
