Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

"Zariah, please tell them to stop!" Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees right on the polished marble floor in front of the entire elite gathering. "They took everything! Marcus is in prison, the house is gone, my friends won't answer my calls! I'm your sister, Zariah! How could you do this to your own blood?!"

The guests murmured in hushed tones. Several high-ranking officers looked at Chloe with cold indifference, already knowing the details of the investigation.

Zariah walked forward slowly, the heels of her military dress boots clicking against the marble. She stopped three feet from her sister and looked down.

"When our parents died, Chloe, I was nineteen," Zariah said, her voice clear and carrying across the hushed hall. "I joined the military not for glory, but to ensure you had food, a roof over your head, and a college education. Every dollar I made from combat deployments went straight to your bank account."

Chloe wept, holding her hands out in supplication. "I know! I'm sorry! I was foolish!"

"You weren't foolish, Chloe," Zariah corrected coldly. "You were cruel. You watched your fiancé pour wine over my head. You watched him insult my service. And instead of standing up for the sister who raised you, you laughed and told him to break my bones."

Chloe’s face turned pale. "I... I didn't mean it! Marcus influenced me!"

"No," Dr. Vance stepped out from the inner circle, his voice booming. "You enjoyed every second of it because you thought your sister was beneath you. You traded her blood money for silk dresses and vanity."

Zariah looked at the security team. "Remove her from the premises. If she sets foot on military property again, arrest her for trespassing."

"Zariah! No! Please!" Chloe screamed as two military police officers grabbed her by the arms and dragged her out of the grand ballroom, her cries fading into the D.C. night air.

Zariah took a deep breath, adjusted her gloves, and turned back to the Joint Chiefs as if nothing had happened.

"Where were we, General?" Zariah asked smoothly.
