Chapter 9 - Healing the Wounds

Six months later, Zariah stood on a quiet bluff overlooking the Potomac River—the very same river that flowed near the Thorne estate, but miles away from that toxic environment.
Beside her stood Marcus’s older cousin, Julian Thorne. Unlike Marcus, Julian had severed ties with his corrupt family years ago to serve as a civilian physician for veterans' affairs. He was a kind, grounded man who had spent years rebuilding lives damaged by war.
"You look peaceful, Zariah," Julian said softly, handing her a warm cup of coffee.
"I am," Zariah smiled gently, taking a sip. "For the first time in fifteen years, I'm not carrying everyone else's burdens on my back."
"What happened with Chloe?" Julian asked carefully.
"She wrote to me from Richmond," Zariah replied, looking out over the sparkling water. "She asked for forgiveness. She said she finally understands what hard work means."
"Will you meet her?"
"Not yet," Zariah said honestly. "Forgiveness takes time, and true redemption requires action, not words. She needs to build her own life now, without relying on mine."
Julian smiled, taking her hand in his. "And what about you, General? What's your next mission?"

Zariah looked down at their joined hands, feeling a genuine warmth and peace she hadn't felt since she was a young girl.
"My next mission," Zariah said gently, "is to live my own life."
