Chapter 3 - The Confrontation on the Highway

The speed at which Ellie and Alana dragged their suitcases out to Ellie's sedan was almost comical. The arrogance that had defined them thirty minutes earlier had evaporated into pure, frantic panic. Mason was shoved into the back seat, still clutching a half-eaten bag of Clarissa's expensive chocolates, as the car kicked up gravel and peeled out down the long dirt driveway.

Clarissa stood on the porch, holding Dustin’s small hand, watching the dust cloud settle over the country road.

"Mom?" Dustin asked, looking up at her with big, uncertain eyes. "Where are we going?"

"We're going to the diner in town to get you a double cheeseburger, a large order of fries, and the biggest chocolate milkshake they have," Clarissa said, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "And then we are going to change our life."

Twenty minutes later, they were sitting in a cozy booth at the local diner three miles down the road. Dustin was happily dipping fries into ketchup, the color slowly returning to his cheeks, while Clarissa watched the highway through the window.

At 3:00 p.m., a familiar black BMW sped past the diner, heading toward the country house at a dangerous rate of speed.

Parker.

Clarissa wiped her mouth with a napkin, pulled out her phone, and dialed his number.

He answered on the first ring, his voice exploding through the speaker. "Clarissa! I'm at the house! Where are you?! Mom and Ellie are hysterically crying on the side of the highway! They said you threatened them with fake audio recordings!"

"I'm at the diner on Main Street, Parker," she said calmly. "Come here. Alone. If you bring them, I drive straight to the police station."

Ten minutes later, the diner door chimed. Parker walked in, looking frantic. His suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie was crooked, and his eyes were bloodshot. He slammed his hands onto the edge of the vinyl booth, glaring down at Clarissa.

"Have you lost your mind?!" Parker barked, keeping his voice down to avoid attracting the attention of the other diners. "Do you have any idea how humiliating this is? My mother is sixty-eight years old! You threw her out on the street!"

"Sit down, Parker," Clarissa said, pointing at the empty seat across from her.

"I am not sitting down until you explain why—"

"I said sit down," Clarissa repeated, her tone so sharp that Parker involuntarily flinched and slid into the booth.

Clarissa slid her tablet across the Formica table, pushing the play button on the full thirty-minute video from three nights ago.

Parker frowned, looking down at the screen. As the video played, his mother’s and sister’s voices filled the space between them. He watched Ellie display the forged trust documents. He heard his mother call Dustin a "weak boy." He heard them layout the entire plan to steal the property, alienate Dustin, and force a divorce where Parker would strip Clarissa of her wealth.

As the video progressed, the anger on Parker’s face slowly morphed into something else—shock, confusion, and finally, a deep, sickening guilt.

He looked up from the tablet, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"Clarissa... I... I didn't know," he stammered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his coffee cup. "I swear to God, I didn't know they were planning this. I thought... I thought they just wanted to bond with Dustin for the summer!"

Clarissa stared at him, searching his eyes for any sign of deception. "You didn't know they were starving my son, Parker? You didn't know your sister had drafted fraudulent trust papers using my power of attorney?"

"No! I swear on my life!" Parker reached out to grab her hand, but Clarissa pulled her arm back out of reach. "Ellie asked me last month if I had access to the house deeds for tax filing purposes, but I didn't give her anything! I didn't know she was trying to steal from you!"

"It doesn't matter if you knew about the theft, Parker," Clarissa said softly, tears finally brimming in her eyes. "Because when I called you today and told you they were abusing Dustin, your first reaction wasn't to protect your son. Your first reaction was to protect them."

May you like

"He's my son too!" Parker pleaded.

"Then why didn't you act like it?"
