Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The fallout from Ellie's arrest hit the Bolaro family like a category five hurricane.

Over the next two weeks, the full extent of the fraud came to light. The forensic audit conducted on Bolaro Designs revealed that Ellie had stolen over $450,000 from Parker’s corporate accounts over an eighteen-month period, funneling the money into her husband Mark’s offshore gambling debts and shell accounts.

Because Parker had cooperated fully with federal authorities and turned over all digital evidence—including Clarissa’s security tapes—he was completely cleared of all criminal wrongdoing. However, his business took a massive hit. He was forced to downsize his staff, liquidate Ellie’s former office, and rebuild his client trust from the ground up.

Ellie was held on a $250,000 bond, facing federal charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and identity theft. Mark, her husband, was picked up by state troopers three days later trying to cross the border into Canada.

Alana was forced to sell her suburban home to pay for Ellie’s initial legal defense fees, moving into a tiny one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Columbus, abandoned by the high-society friends she had spent decades trying to impress.

Meanwhile, back at the country house, the air felt lighter, cleaner, and filled with a long-forgotten sense of peace.

Clarissa sat on the front porch swing, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of amber and rose. Beside her, Dustin was happily building a castle out of wooden blocks, his laughter ringing out clear and loud across the quiet yard.

The screen door opened, and Parker stepped out onto the porch, carrying two mugs of warm tea. He looked tired—dark circles hung beneath his eyes from long days spent working with auditors and lawyers—but the heavy, suffocating cloud that had hung over his posture for years was gone.

He handed a mug to Clarissa and sat down quietly on the edge of the porch steps near Dustin.

"How are the audit reports looking?" Clarissa asked softly.

"The bank finalized the clearance papers this morning," Parker said, taking a sip of tea. "The firm is clean. It's going to take a year of hard work to recover the lost revenue, but... we're going to survive."

He looked back at Clarissa, his eyes filled with a deep, aching remorse.

"Clarissa... I know I don't deserve it, but I need to say it again. I am so sorry. For everything. For not seeing who they were. For not protecting Dustin the second I saw him hurting."

Clarissa looked at her husband. The anger that had burned inside her on that terrible Friday had settled into a quiet, sober reality.

"You made a choice, Parker," she said gently. "You spent three years trying to please people who were using you, while ignoring the boy who actually needed your love."

"I know," Parker choked out, a tear slipping down his cheek. "And I will spend the rest of my life making it up to both of you. If you want a divorce, Clarissa... I will sign the papers. I won't fight you. You deserve better."

Clarissa looked at Dustin, who had paused his block-building and was watching Parker with quiet, curious eyes.
