Chapter 9 - The Trial and The Final Cut

Six months later, the federal trial of Elena Bolaro concluded in a district court in Columbus.

Ellie pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in exchange for a reduced sentence. She was sentenced to four years in a federal correctional facility, along with a court order to pay $350,000 in restitution to Bolaro Designs.

Mark received six years for his role in the offshore laundering scheme.

On the day of the sentencing, Alana attempted to approach Clarissa in the courthouse hallway. The old woman looked broken, aged by ten years, wearing a faded coat, her hands trembling as she clutched a worn handbag.

"Clarissa... please," Alana begged, her voice cracking as tears ran down her wrinkled cheeks. "Tell them to lower the sentence. Ellie has a child! Mason misses his mother! How can you be so heartless?!"

Clarissa stopped walking. She looked at her former mother-in-law, feeling no anger—only a profound, hollow pity.

"Ellie chose her path, Alana," Clarissa said calmly, her voice echoing in the marble hallway. "She didn't care about my child when she starved him in my home. She didn't care about your son when she tried to send him to prison for her debts. You reaped what you sowed."

"You destroyed my family!" Alana wailed, pointing a shaking finger at her.

Parker stepped up beside Clarissa, placing his arm around his wife's shoulders. He looked down at his biological mother with a calm, unyielding strength that Alana had never seen in him before.

"No, Mom," Parker said clearly. "You destroyed your own family the moment you traded love for greed. Do not contact us again."

They turned and walked down the steps of the courthouse together, leaving the weeping old woman standing alone in the shadows of the marble pillars.

As they stepped out into the bright afternoon sunshine, the cool breeze carried the fresh scent of blooming spring flowers.

Clarissa took a deep breath, holding her husband's hand tightly in hers. They were going home—back to the country house, where Dustin was waiting for them with his grandmother on Clarissa's side, ready to spend the evening roasting marshmallows around the fire pit.

The past was finally buried. The truth had set them free.
