Chapter 2 - The Sealed Testament

While the hospital staff moved Lucas and Lily into an isolated, bulletproof nursery on the sixth floor, Detective Miller sat down across from me in a private family consultation room. He placed the heavy paper envelope on the wooden table between us. My mother’s handwriting—delicate, sloping, and blotched with grease and salt stains—spelled out my name across the front: Emma.
"I spoke with the district attorney," Miller said gently. "Because of your age, I shouldn't normally read a formal case document to you. But your mother explicitly wrote on the flap that you were to hear every word the moment you were safe. Do you want me to read it to you, Emma?"
I nodded slowly, pulling my knees up against my chest.
Miller broke the red wax seal and unfolded three yellowed pages torn from an old ledger. He took a deep breath and began to read aloud:
'My darling Emma,
If you are reading this, it means my heart finally failed me, and you were brave enough to do what we practiced. You were always my smartest girl, my little rock. If you made it to the hospital with Lucas and Lily, know that my last breath was a prayer of thanks for your courage.
There are things I could never tell you while we lived behind the pine trees. My real name is Victoria Vance. Nine years ago, I married Julian Vance, believing he was a good man. I was young, naive, and blinded by his wealth. But three years into our marriage, I discovered the terrible truth: Julian’s shipping ports were fronts for illegal weapons, human trafficking, and extortion. When I confronted him, he made it clear I would never be allowed to leave.
When I found out I was pregnant with you, Emma, I knew I couldn't let my child grow up in a house built on blood. I gathered evidence—a master ledger containing offshore bank accounts, corrupt political payoffs, and shipment routes—and I fled in the dead of night with the help of a federal agent named Thomas Reynolds.
For seven years, we were ghosts. But Julian’s reach is long. Two months ago, I spotted his scouts in town. I knew my weak heart wouldn't give me much longer. When I got pregnant with the twins, the stress proved too much. I hid the master ledger where Julian would never think to look—inside the hollow frame of the old red wheelbarrow your grandfather built.
If Julian finds you, he will take the twins to raise as his heirs and discard you. Do not trust anyone who comes without Agent Reynolds. Give the ledger to the law, keep your brother and sister together, and remember that my love will follow you through every footstep you take.
Forever your Mom, Clara/Victoria.'
The room was deathly quiet when Miller finished reading. My mind reeled. The rusty, squeaky wheelbarrow I had dragged over six miles of asphalt and dirt wasn't just a wagon—it was a vault containing the key to destroying a criminal empire.
"Where is the wheelbarrow now?" Miller snapped, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the linoleum floor.

"It's downstairs," I said, panic rising in my throat. "In the ambulance bay!"
Just as Miller reached for the door handle, the hospital’s red emergency lights began to flash wildly, and a sharp alarm pierced the air.
