Chapter 7 - The Battle of Blackwood Ridge

"Everyone into the bunker beneath the floor!" Reynolds commanded, throwing open a heavy steel trapdoor set into the stone hearth of the fireplace. "Sarah, take the twins down first!"

"I'm not leaving you, Thomas," Detective Miller said, racking the bolt of a heavy tactical rifle. "We take a stand here."

"No," I spoke up, standing firmly between the two men. "Mom said Julian wants me and the babies. If he thinks we’re trapped inside, he’ll burn the whole house down with all of you in it."

Reynolds crouched down in front of me. "What are you suggesting, Emma?"

"We use the wheelbarrow," I said, pointing to the rusted, bent iron cart that Reynolds’ men had hauled up from the truck. "We put dummy blankets inside it and leave it on the front porch under the light. Make him think I tried to run again."

Reynolds stared at me for three long seconds, a slow, proud grin spreading across his weathered face. "You really are Victoria's daughter. A born strategist."

Within five minutes, the trap was set. Sarah, Miller, and the babies climbed down into the reinforced subterranean bunker, locking the steel hatch from the inside. Reynolds and I stayed above ground in the darkened living room, behind reinforced ballistic glass windows.

Outside, the forest exploded with light. Massive spotlights mounted on armored trucks flooded the porch, turning night into blinding day.

A loudspeaker boomed through the mountain trees, carrying a voice that was smooth, cold, and utterly devoid of human warmth:

"Victoria! I know you are dead, but I know my blood is in that house! Thomas Reynolds, step out with my children and the ledger, and I will grant you a quick death!"

Through the thick glass, I saw him. Julian Vance stepped out from behind an armored SUV. He wore an expensive wool overcoat, holding a gold-tipped cane in one hand. He looked exactly like the photograph Detective Miller had shown me in the hospital—hard, arrogant, and convinced that the world belonged to him.

"Look at the porch, Julian!" Reynolds shouted through the house intercom system, his voice echoing over the outdoor speakers. "The little girl left you a gift!"

Julian’s eyes traveled to the front porch, where the old, squeaky red wheelbarrow sat illuminated directly beneath the central floodlight. Inside lay the leather-bound ledgers, open for all to see, along with a bundle of blankets.

Julian smiled—a cruel, triumphant sneer. He gestured to four of his armed enforcers. "Retrieve the ledger and my children. Kill Reynolds."

The four men stepped onto the porch steps.

"Now, Emma!" Reynolds shouted.

I hit the red detonator switch on the wall—the one linked to the compound’s emergency defense charges buried beneath the gravel driveway.
