Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Ledger

Agent Reynolds’ mountain compound wasn't just a house; it was a fortress carved directly into the face of Blackwood Ridge. Reinforced concrete walls were hidden behind thick pine siding, and solar panels sat disguised beneath timber canopies.
For three days, we hid inside the warm, wood-paneled living room. Sarah cared for Lucas and Lily, using medical supplies Reynolds had stocked in his basement clinic, while Detective Miller and Reynolds worked around the clock at a heavy oak table covered in computer monitors and maps.
Using a blowtorch, Reynolds cut open the rusted lockbox retrieved from the wheelbarrow frame. Inside were four leather-bound ledgers, dozens of encrypted micro-drives, and a thick stack of legal documents signed in blood-red ink.
"It’s better than we thought," Reynolds said on the third night, holding up a transparent folder. "Clara didn't just record Vance’s financial transactions. She mapped out his personal sanctuary—an island estate off the coast of Georgia where he keeps his primary servers and his private army."
"Can the FBI raid it?" Miller asked, rubbing his tired eyes.
"Not yet," Reynolds sighed, tapping the table. "Julian has two federal judges on his payroll. The moment we upload this data through normal justice channels, a leak will spring, and Vance will burn the evidence and vanish to South America."
"Then how do we stop him?" I asked, stepping up to the table. I was wearing a clean flannel shirt that was far too big for me, its sleeves rolled up to my wrists.
Reynolds looked down at me, his gaze full of respect. "We force his hand, Emma. We make him come to us on our ground, where his money and his judges can't protect him."
"He’s already coming," Sarah called out suddenly from the surveillance station by the window. Her face was pale. "Look at the thermal perimeter cameras."

On the dark monitors, dozens of heat signatures were moving steadily up the forested slopes of Blackwood Ridge. Vehicles with night-vision floodlights were cutting through the dense timber, encircling the compound from all three access roads.
Julian Vance had used his satellite tracking network to locate Reynolds’ off-grid generators. The final confrontation was no longer days away—it was arriving on our doorstep.
