Chapter 10 - The Golden Table

Christmas morning arrived with a quiet, magical stillness. The ground outside was covered in a fresh blanket of white snow, but inside our house, the fireplace roared, throwing a warm, amber glow across the living room.

There was no folding chair in the corner.

Instead, I had expanded our small kitchen table, covering it with a beautiful linen tablecloth, sparkling glasses, and plates piled high with fresh pancakes, strawberries, and hot chocolate.

Willa sat at the head of the table, wearing a brand-new holiday dress she had picked out herself. She wasn't trying to shrink or disappear. She sat tall, her laughter filling the room as she opened her gifts—art supplies, a new bicycle, and a beautiful leather sketchbook with her name engraved on the cover in gold.

She opened the sketchbook, and on the very first page, she had already drawn a picture. It wasn't a picture of a broken family or a dark kitchen.

It was a drawing of a big, beautiful house with two figures standing on the porch, holding hands under a massive golden sun. Underneath, in her crooked, eight-year-old handwriting, she had written: “Me and Mommy. The best family.”

I sat down beside her, pulling her close against my side as we ate our breakfast together in the warm, quiet house. The hurt of the past thirty-six years was finally gone, washed away by the realization that family isn't defined by blood or duty. It is defined by the people who make space for you at the table, the people who look at your soft heart and promise to protect it.

"Merry Christmas, Mommy," Willa whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"Merry Christmas, my beautiful girl," I replied, kissing her forehead. "We made it home."
