Chapter 4 - The Legal Letter

The next morning, I realized I couldn't just play defense. My family had money, influence in the local town, and a complete lack of morals. I needed legal protection.

I spent my entire savings account to retain the best family lawyer in the city—a sharp, no-nonsense woman named Melissa Vance. When I sat in her office and showed her the documentation, the text messages from my brothers, and the security footage from my porch, her expression became lethal.

"They threatened to use a custody battle to force you into silence?" Melissa asked, leaning back in her leather chair. "That is a textbook case of intimidation and harassment. And what they did to Willa at Thanksgiving... while it might be difficult to prosecute criminally as child abuse, it absolutely constitutes intentional infliction of emotional distress."

"I don't want their money, Melissa," I said, holding a tissue tightly. "I just want them away from my daughter. Permanently."

"We are going to file for a formal, permanent injunction—a restraining order against Truitt, Desmond, and your parents," Melissa declared. "Furthermore, I am sending a cease-and-desist letter to Truitt's business and Desmond's employer, detailing their continued harassment of you following the Thanksgiving incident. If they want to play dirty, we will expose every single layer of their dirt."

When the legal letters arrived at my parents' house and my brothers' workplaces on Wednesday morning, the response was instantaneous. The corporate office where Desmond worked placed him on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Truitt's local landscaping business began losing commercial contracts as local business owners realized who they were funding.

The castle they had built on a foundation of cruelty was beginning to crack.
