Chapter 9 - The New Circle

As Christmas approached, I received a surprise invitation from Mrs. Gable and the remaining members of the church circle. They asked Willa and me to attend the annual town winter festival as their guests of honor.
I was hesitant at first, fearing more drama, but Mrs. Gable assured me that this wasn't about my parents. It was about community.
When we arrived at the town square, the area was illuminated by thousands of twinkling white lights. A massive Christmas tree stood in the center, surrounded by stalls selling hot cider and handmade crafts.
The moment the women from the circle saw Willa, they didn't look pitying; they looked overjoyed. Mrs. Gable walked up to Willa, handing her a beautiful, handmade woolen scarf in her favorite color—burgundy.
"We heard you love to draw, Willa," Mrs. Gable said kindly, bending down to her height. "We were wondering if you would help us design the holiday cards for the local children's hospital this year? We need someone with a very bright imagination."
Willa’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. "I have a lot of ideas! I can draw a snowman with a giant hat!"

"That sounds perfect," Mrs. Gable smiled, looking up at me with an expression of deep respect and unspoken apology for the years they had let my mother’s facade fool them. "You raised a beautiful, strong girl, Evelyn. You should be very proud."
"I am," I said, watching my daughter skip ahead to show her new friends her drawings. "I really am."
