Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Ledgers

My room in the east wing was larger than the entire two-bedroom apartment I had rented in the city. The bed was draped in raw silk sheets, a marble fireplace crackled merrily against the chill night air, and a walk-in closet was already filled with brand-new clothes tailored precisely to my size.
Dr. Mercer, a quiet, professional woman in her fifties, had cleaned the scratches on my neck, applied a soothing medical salve to my bruised shoulder, and given me a clean bill of health.
Yet, despite the soft bed and the warm fire, I could not sleep.
At 2:00 AM, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater and trousers from the closet, I walked down the dim hallways of the estate. The mansion was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic footsteps of armed guards patrolling the outer perimeters.
I found Dante’s private study at the end of the north corridor. The heavy mahogany doors were slightly ajar, casting a long strip of warm light across the Persian rug outside.
I knocked softly on the wood.
"Come in, Elena," Dante’s voice called out instantly.
I pushed the door open. The study was a fortress of leather-bound books, glowing monitors, and maps of global shipping routes pinned to dark corkboards. Dante sat behind a massive desk covered in financial documents, his tie loosened, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
"You should be sleeping," he said, setting down a golden pen.
"So should you," I replied, walking over to the glass wall overlooking the ocean. "I can't sleep in rooms that large. I kept waiting for the sound of my neighbor's TV through the thin drywall."
Dante let out a low, gentle laugh. "It takes time to get used to peace."
"This isn't peace, Dante," I said, turning to look at his desk. "This is a command center before a battle."
I walked over to the desk and pointed to a thick, leather-bound dossier stamped with a red wax seal. "What is that?"
"The preliminary interrogation report from Nathan Vale," Dante said grimly, leaning back in his chair. "My lawyers and contacts in the prosecutor's office have been working through the night. Nathan folded the moment Detective Vance mentioned federal racketeering charges. He gave us the names of his primary handlers."
"Let me guess," I said, leaning over the desk to read the top page. "The Cassano family."
Dante went completely still. "How do you know that name?"
"Because three years ago, when I was working as an junior auditor for a regional logistics firm, I flagged six shell companies registered in Delaware," I explained, pulling a chair out and sitting down across from him. "Every single one of those companies was managed by a legal entity named Cassano Holdings. When I brought the file to my senior partner, he told me to erase the audit trails and fired me two days later."
Dante reached out, picking up a photograph from the file and sliding it across the wood toward me.
The photograph showed an older man with sharp, fox-like features, a thin silver mustache, and cold, pale blue eyes. He was sitting in a private box at an opera house, surrounded by armed bodyguards.
"Julian Cassano," Dante said, his voice laced with venom. "He was our father's underboss twenty years ago. He was the man who opened the gates of our estate to the rival factions the night our family was slaughtered."
My blood ran cold. I stared at the photo, my fingers instinctively reaching up to press the cold silver of my locket through my sweater. "He's the reason our parents are dead?"
"He took over our father's operations in the North," Dante said, his hands forming tight fists against the leather desktop. "For twenty years, he has built an empire on the blood of the Moretti name. He thought I was a harmless child he could control. When I broke away and built Moretti Holdings, he realized he couldn't kill me without starting an open war that would bring down the federal authorities on his shipping lines."
Dante leaned forward, his dark eyes burning with relentless fire.
"Julian Cassano was Victoria and Nathan Vale's primary backer. The money Victoria was laundering through L'Etoile was meant to fund Cassano’s final expansion into the city’s deep-water ports."
"And my audit destroyed their pipeline," I realized.
"Your audit didn't just destroy their pipeline, Elena," Dante smiled, a dark, lethal expression. "It gave us the leverage to cut off his head."
"Then let me finish the audit," I said firmly, reaching out to pull the thick stack of financial ledgers toward myself.
Dante reached out, his hand gently covering mine. "No. You've spent your life surviving, Elena. You don't need to fight my wars."
"It's not just your war, Dante!" I said, my voice rising with sudden, fiercely suppressed emotion. "They took my childhood! They left me at a bus station with a broken wrist and a fever! They made me grow up believing I was nobody, that I belonged nowhere!"
I stood up, pointing down at the ledgers.
"Victoria Vale called me a servant! She tore my clothes and thought she could crush me because I was wearing an apron! Well, I am a Moretti, and I have a degree in financial forensics. You have the guns, Dante. But I have the key to his bank accounts. Let me help you tear his empire down."
Dante stared at me, stunned into complete silence.

Slowly, a proud, lethal smile spread across his face. He released my hand, opened a locked drawer in his desk, and pulled out a encrypted high-end laptop, sliding it over to my side of the desk.
"The password is the date our father died," Dante said quietly. "Welcome to the family business, sister."
