Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the Past

The cool air of the server vault hummed loudly around us, but inside the small room, time seemed to stop entirely.
I slowly stood up from the console chair, holding the printed paper receipt in my left hand. I did not raise my hands. I did not flinch from the black barrel of the gun pointed at my face.
"Shoot me, Julian," I said, my voice eerily calm. "Shoot me right here. But it won't bring your money back."
Cassano’s eyes flicked to the glowing monitor behind me, where the big red digits showed zero balance across all ninety-two offshore accounts. His hand trembled with sudden, violent rage.
"You little thief!" Cassano roared. "I built that empire over twenty years! I bled for that money!"
"You bled other people for that money," I corrected sharply, taking a slow step toward him. "You murdered my parents. You abandoned a six-year-old child at a bus station in the middle of winter. You spent two decades buying politicians while innocent people died because of your illegal weapons shipments."
"Your father was weak!" Cassano spat, his knuckles turning white around the grip of the gun. "He wanted to turn the Moretti family legitimate! He wanted to stop the shipping lines and go clean! He was going to destroy everything we built! I did what had to be done to survive!"
"And look at you now," I said, gesturing to the empty vault around us. "You're a murderer with no money, no crew, and no future."
Cassano growled, raising the pistol to level directly between my eyes. "I may be ruined, little girl. But you won't live to celebrate it!"
BANG!
A deafening gunshot echoed through the small metal room.
Cassano’s gun clattered to the floor as a bullet tore through his right shoulder, spraying blood against the white server racks behind him. He screamed in pain, stumbling back against the doorframe.
Dante stepped through the doorway, holding a smoking silver pistol in his hand. His face was cold, emotionless, and terrifying as he stepped over Cassano’s fallen gun.
Behind him, dozens of federal agents in tactical vests poured into the service hallway, led by Detective Vance and the Regional FBI Director.
"Julian Cassano," Detective Vance announced, her gun drawn as two agents tackled Cassano to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back. "By order of the Federal District Court, you are under arrest for treason, enterprise racketeering, four counts of first-degree murder, and global financial fraud."
Cassano thrashed against the carpet, spitting blood as the steel cuffs clicked over his wrists. "Moretti! You think you've won?! My lawyers will drag this through the courts for ten years!"
Dante walked over to the console, took the paper receipt from my hand, and held it in front of Cassano’s face.
"Your lawyers were paid using Account #409 in Zurich, Julian," Dante whispered softly into his ear. "That account has just been seized by the Department of Justice. You don't have a legal team anymore. You have a public defender."
Cassano’s face completely drained of color. The reality of his absolute defeat finally broke him. He stopped fighting, bowing his head as the federal agents dragged him out of the vault into the corridor.
Dante turned to me. He set his gun on the desk, reached out, and pulled me into a tight, fierce embrace.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice shaking slightly.
"I'm fine, Dante," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder. "I'm completely fine."
May you like
Dante pulled back, looking down at my face with a look of profound relief and pride. "You did it, Sofia. You brought him down."
"My name is Elena Sofia Moretti," I said, a soft, confident smile touching my lips. "And our family is finally clean."
