Chapter 6 - The Liquidation of an Empire

Julian Cassano’s face went completely grey. The three city councilmen standing beside him looked back and forth between us, sensing the sudden, deadly shift in the air.
"Sofia...?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly before he caught himself. He let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Dante, what kind of sick game is this? Sofia Moretti died twenty years ago in a house fire."
"She survived, Julian," Dante said, his hand resting casually inside his tuxedo jacket, where the outline of a concealed holster was barely visible. "Just as our family's honor survived. And tonight, every lie you have told for two decades comes to an end."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. He signaled subtly with his left hand, and four heavy-set security guards in dark suits immediately moved from the perimeter of the room, forming a protective semicircle around the dais.
"This is a private charity event, Moretti," Julian hissed, dropping the friendly act entirely. "You are outnumbered, outgunned, and standing in the middle of my city. If you make a scene here, my men will cut you down before you reach the front doors."
"They are welcome to try," Dante replied calmly.
While Julian’s attention was completely fixed on Dante, I subtly stepped back into the shadow of a large marble pillar. Using the distraction created by the confrontation, I slipped through a side service door marked Staff Only.
The service corridor behind the ballroom was dimly lit and smelled of clean laundry and industrial food prep.
I pulled a pair of lightweight black running shoes from my leather clutch bag, quickly swapping out my high heels, and pulled a small electronic bypass device—given to me by Dante’s chief technology officer—from under my coat.
I moved quickly through the corridors, following the building schematics I had memorized during the drive.
Two minutes later, I reached the heavy reinforced steel door of the VIP Server Vault.
A single guard stood outside the door, wearing a security headset and holding a stun baton.
Before he could turn around, a quiet thud echoed down the hallway.
Marcus Thorne—Dante’s chief bodyguard, who had been tailing me silently through the ventilation access routes—stepped out from behind a linen cart. The guard collapsed quietly into Marcus's arms, completely unconscious.
"You have four minutes, Lady Sofia," Marcus whispered, setting the guard gently down against the wall. "Dante is keeping Cassano occupied in the main room, but his secondary security detail is already sweeping the halls."
"Four minutes is more than enough," I said.
I plugged the bypass device into the server vault’s digital keypad. The screen flashed rapidly through thousands of code combinations before displaying a solid green light: ACCESS GRANTED.
The heavy steel door unlatched with a loud pneumatic hiss.
I stepped inside the cool, climate-controlled server room. Tall racks of black servers hummed loudly, their blue indicator lights blinking in rhythmic patterns. In the center of the room sat the master administrative terminal.
I sat down in the leather chair, pulled out my encrypted flash drive, and inserted it into the master USB port.
My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard like a concert pianist.
> OVERRIDE SECURITIES_KEY: MORETTI_DELTA_9
> ACCESSING LIECHTENSTEIN_CLEARING_ACCOUNTS...
> VALIDATING FORENSIC EVIDENCE FILE #8841...
The system attempted to trigger an automated security firewall, displaying a red flashing warning on the central monitor: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED. PURGING DATA IN 60 SECONDS.
"Not today," I muttered under my breath.
I bypassed the firewall using the master administrative protocol code I had discovered in Nathan Vale’s secondary ledger—the exact code Cassano used to steal money from his own partners.
> FIREWALL OVERRIDDEN.
> INITIATING LIQUIDATION PROTOCOL...
> TRANSFERRING $420,000,000 TO FEDERAL RESTITUTION FUND...
A progress bar flashed across the screen: 10%... 45%... 85%... 100%.
TRANSFER COMPLETE. ACCOUNT BALANCES: $0.00.
A secondary prompt appeared on the screen: PRINT AUDIT RECEIPT?
I hit YES. The small thermal printer beside the terminal began to hum, spitting out a long strip of paper containing the confirmation codes for the complete financial destruction of Julian Cassano’s empire.
"Step away from the console, girl."
I froze.
I slowly turned my head.
May you like
Standing in the doorway of the server vault was Julian Cassano himself, holding a suppressed black pistol pointed directly at my forehead. His face was twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
"You really are your father's daughter," Cassano snarled, his finger tightening around the trigger. "Smart, arrogant, and foolish enough to think numbers can protect you from a bullet."
