Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The grand Mercer estate—now officially renamed The Margaret Vance Sanctuary—had been completely transformed. I had donated the massive, oppressive mahogany mansion to a non-profit foundation that provided housing, legal aid, and counseling for victims of domestic abuse and corporate exploitation.

Today was the grand opening.

The high iron gates were wide open, but this time, the grounds were filled with laughter, music, and children running across the manicured lawns. The dark, heavy velvet curtains had been replaced with bright, airy glass windows that let the sunlight flood into every room.

I stood on the stone terrace, watching the celebration. I was wearing a simple, beautiful cream-colored dress—not to look presentable for anyone else, but because it made me feel joyful.

"It's a beautiful turnout, Elena," a warm voice said beside me.

I turned to see Arthur Vance. He had traded his usual sharp corporate suit for a casual linen shirt, looking relaxed and genuinely happy. He handed me a glass of champagne.

"We did a good thing here, Arthur," I said, clinking my glass against his.

"You did a good thing, Elena," he corrected me, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my heart flutter in a way it hadn't in years. "You took a place that was filled with cruelty and turned it into a sanctuary for healing. Not many people have the strength to do that."

"I had good people helping me," I said, looking at him softly. "I had you."

Arthur stepped a little closer, his hand gently resting on the stone banister near mine. "Elena... the legal battles are over. The company is thriving. The past is completely behind you. I think it’s finally time you started focusing on your own happiness."

"And what if my happiness involves you, Arthur?" I asked, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face.

Arthur smiled back, his eyes full of warmth and promise. "Then I’d say you’ve made an excellent legal judgment, Counselor."

We stood together on the terrace, watching the sun begin to set over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, pink, and purple.

Four years ago, I sat at a dark dining table, covered in hot soup, surrounded by people who mocked my existence and gave me ten minutes to disappear into the night.

But I didn't disappear. I stood up. I fought back. And today, as I stood in the bright, beautiful light of my own creation, surrounded by love, respect, and a future entirely of my own making, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

My ten minutes were up. And my beautiful, brilliant life had just begun.
