Chapter 2 - The Eviction

The next ten minutes were a masterclass in chaotic desperation.

Evelyn refused to move, demanding that her personal maid fetch her fur coats. The security guards gently but firmly informed her that the maid had already been dismissed for the evening—with a generous severance package paid directly by me—and that no property was to leave the house.

"This is theft! Absolute theft!" Evelyn screamed as she was escorted down the grand marble staircase, her expensive silk heels clicking erratically. "I built this social circle! I am the chairperson of the Hospital Gala! You will be ruined in this city by tomorrow morning, Elena!"

"The board of the Hospital Gala received a dossier on your son's embezzlement two hours ago, Evelyn," I called down from the banister. "I believe they are already voting to replace you."

Grant didn't scream. He was too busy trying to delete files from his phone, until the forensic accountant politely reminded him that all company servers had been remotely mirrored and locked down at 8:00 PM. Any deletion of data now would constitute destruction of evidence in a criminal proceeding.

"You planned this," Grant said, stopping at the front door. He looked back at me, his eyes full of a dangerous, toxic hatred. "You sat at my table, let my mother talk down to you, let me treat you like dirt, all while you were digging a grave for my family."

"I didn't dig the grave, Grant. I just bought the shovel you used to dig it yourself," I replied. "Every time you took credit for my consulting reports, you proved to the board that you didn't understand your own logistics network. Every time you spent a million dollars on a yacht while your factory workers faced layoffs, you drew the attention of the federal regulators. I didn't destroy the Mercer empire. You did. I just bought up the ruins so I could protect the people you hurt."

"I loved you," he lied, his voice cracking.

"You loved having a quiet, brilliant woman to do your homework and clean up your messes while you played the big, successful billionaire," I said. "Goodbye, Grant."

The heavy oak door shut behind them with a definitive thud.

The silence that followed was heavy, filled with the scent of spilled oxtail soup and expensive perfume. I stood in the center of the grand foyer, my knees finally giving out. I collapsed onto the bottom step of the staircase, burying my face in my hands.

Arthur Vance walked over, his expensive leather shoes quiet on the marble. He reached into his pocket and handed me a small, sterile tube of burn cream.

"You did well, Elena," he said gently. "But you need to see a doctor for that scalp. Grant’s mother might have thought you wouldn't fight back, but she forgot that a snake doesn't rattle before it strikes."

"I didn't want it to end like this, Arthur," I whispered, the first tears finally spilling over my eyelids, burning against the raw skin of my cheeks. "I really did want a family. I wanted a home."

"You will have both," Arthur said, looking around the empty, cavernous mansion. "But you had to clear out the termites before you could rebuild the house. Come on. The medical team is waiting in the SUV. Let's get you cleaned up. Tomorrow, the real war begins."

As the SUV pulled away from the Mercer estate, I looked out the window. Grant, Evelyn, Charlotte, and Julian were standing at the iron gates of the property, stranded in the dark, waiting for an Uber that they would have to pay for with whatever cash was left in their pockets.

For three years, I had been the shadow in that house. Tonight, the shadow had taken the light.
