Chapter 6 - The Trap

The following morning, the lobby of Aegis-Mercer Global was swarming with federal agents and reporters. Flashes from cameras lit up the glass facade as agents carried boxes of files out of the building.

Across the street, parked in a silver Mercedes, Grant and Julian Mercer watched the chaos unfold. Grant had a smirk on his face, a flask of whiskey in his hand.

"Look at her," Grant gloated to his uncle. "She thought she was a genius. Now she’s going down for environmental crimes. The Mercer name will be cleared, and we can buy back the assets for a fraction of the cost."

Julian didn't smile. He was watching his tablet, tracking the stock price. "Something is wrong, Grant. The stock isn't dropping as fast as it should. It’s holding steady."

"Of course it's dropping! The EPA is raiding the building!"

"No," Julian said, his voice dropping in terror. "Look at the news."

He turned on the car’s television monitor. A live broadcast from the federal courthouse was playing. I was standing at a podium, surrounded by Arthur Vance and the Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Good morning," I said to the crowd of microphones. "As Chairwoman of Aegis-Mercer Global, I am here today to announce that our internal legal and audit teams have successfully uncovered a massive, multi-million-dollar corporate sabotage scheme orchestrated by the former management of this company, specifically Mr. Grant Mercer and his uncle, Julian Mercer."

Grant froze, the flask slipping from his fingers and spilling onto the leather seat. "What... what is she doing?"

"Two weeks ago, upon taking control of the company," I continued on the screen, "we initiated a comprehensive audit of all historical projects. We discovered that Mr. Grant Mercer had established an illegal, off-books subsidiary to conduct unauthorized excavations in Savannah, intentionally bypassing environmental protocols. More importantly, we discovered that he knowingly caused an environmental hazard, intending to use it as a financial weapon against the current shareholders."

The reporters began shouting questions, but I held up a hand.

"Aegis-Mercer Global has already entered into a full cooperation agreement with the EPA. We have provided them with all the encrypted servers, email logs, and bank records linking the illegal subsidiary directly to Grant Mercer’s personal bank accounts—and to the offshore funds provided by Julian Mercer’s venture capital firm. Furthermore, we have already fully funded a ninety-million-dollar escrow account to completely remediate the Savannah site at no cost to the taxpayers."

The EPA Director stepped up to the microphone. "We want to thank Ms. Elena Vance for her extraordinary bravery and transparency. Thanks to her whistleblowing, federal warrants have been issued for the immediate arrest of Grant Mercer and Julian Mercer for corporate sabotage, environmental conspiracy, and market manipulation."

Inside the silver Mercedes, the doors suddenly locked.

Before Grant or Julian could even react, four unmarked police cruisers blocked them in from the front and back. Uniformed officers stepped out, their guns drawn.

"Get out of the vehicle! Hands where we can see them!" an officer shouted, slamming his baton against the driver's window.

Julian looked at his nephew with a look of absolute disgust. "You idiot. You thought she was playing a game of checkers. She was playing chess, and you just gave her your king."

Grant didn't answer. He could only stare at the television screen, where I was looking directly into the camera, as if I could see him through the lens. There was no anger in my eyes. Only the cold, absolute finality of justice.
