Chapter 4 - The Dinner Table Trap

The dining room of the Lauron estate was an masterpiece of modern architecture—a massive room enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the twinkling lights of Los Angeles. A long marble table sat in the center, set with crystal glassware and silver cutlery.

Julian Creswell sat at one end, sipping a vintage Cabernet. He was a handsome man in his late forties, impeccably tailored in a bespoke suit, with silver-streaked hair and a charming, effortless smile that had fooled Wall Street for two decades.

"You look radiant tonight, Clare," Julian said, his tone smooth as velvet. "Though I must admit, I was shocked when I heard the rumors from my bank staff yesterday. They said you knelt in the dirt on Wilshire Boulevard for two street urchins."

Clare sat opposite him, her glass of wine untouched. She wore an elegant black dress, her hair pulled back into a tight, commanding bun.

"They were children, Julian," Clare said calmly. "Not 'urchins.' Children who were abandoned by a society that prefers to look away."

Julian chuckled softly, swirling his wine. "Always the philanthropist, Clare. That’s what I always admired about you. But really... taking them to a hospital? Bringing them into your home? People are talking. They say you’ve finally lost your mind over... what happened six years ago."

"Do they?" Clare raised an eyebrow. "And what do you think, Julian?"

Julian paused, his blue eyes narrowing slightly behind his smile. "I think you are suffering from a tragic relapse of grief. You see a little girl on the street, you project your lost Maya onto her, and you lose your perspective. I’m worried about you, Clare. As a friend. As someone who loved you."

"Loved me?" Clare leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "Is that why you offered to help me handle my estate's finances after Maya vanished? Is that why Apex Medical tried to buy out my hospital shares three months after my delivery?"

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that only someone who had studied him for years would catch. "Apex is a business venture, Clare. Business and grief don't mix."

"Let's talk about Sarah Jenkins," Clare said bluntly.

The name hit the room like a thunderbolt. Julian froze, his glass hovering halfway to his lips.

"Sarah Jenkins?" Julian repeated, his voice dropping its warm cadence. "I have no idea who that is."

"She was a nurse at Malibu Women's Clinic," Clare said smoothly. "The clinic owned by Apex Medical. Your company. The nurse who took two million dollars in wire transfers from a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands—a corporation called Creswell Capital Limited."

Julian set his glass down on the table with a sharp clink. The mask of the charming billionaire began to slip, revealing the cold, calculating predator beneath.

"Clare," Julian said, his voice quiet and threatening. "You are treading on dangerous ground. Making wild allegations about financial transactions from six years ago—"

"I’m not making allegations, Julian. I’m stating facts," Clare interrupted, her voice cool and unyielding. "Six years ago, you knew I was planning to pull my family's investments out of your bank. If I had done that, Creswell Bank would have collapsed. So you needed a leverage. You bought off the head nurse. When I went into labor, you had her doctor my medical files to conceal the fact that I was carrying twins."

Julian stared at her, his jaw clenching.

"You took the first baby—Rose—and gave her to Sarah Jenkins to keep hidden as insurance," Clare continued, stepping through the puzzle pieces with lethal precision. "And three months later, when I still refused to sign the merger documents, you had Sarah kidnap Maya—whom I called Lily—from my nursery. You intended to use them against me. But then Sarah Jenkins panicked. She took the money, took the babies, and disappeared into the underground."

"You have no proof," Julian hissed, leaning across the table. "You have nothing but the ramblings of a grieving woman and the DNA of two homeless kids!"

"I don't need proof for a court, Julian," Clare whispered, leaning closer until they were inches apart. "I have my daughters back. They are upstairs right now, sleeping in soft beds, eating warm food, and forgetting that men like you exist."

Julian’s eyes went wide. He suddenly realized the grave mistake he had made by coming here tonight. He had walked right into her territory.

"You think you’ve won?" Julian sneered, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "You think you can protect them? I own the judges in this city, Clare. I own the child protective services directors. By tomorrow morning, I will have an emergency court order declaring you mentally unfit, and those children will be removed from this house and placed into state custody. And once they are in the system... accidents happen."

Clare didn't flinch. She slowly stood up, looking down at him with pure disdain.

"Try it," Clare said softly. "Step outside my house, Julian. Look at the perimeter."

Julian frowned. He turned toward the grand glass windows overlooking the driveway.

Outside, floodlights suddenly flickered on, illuminating the entire estate grounds. Parked along the driveway were six black SUVs belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Standing near the fountain were dozens of agents in windbreakers, accompanied by Marcus and several federal prosecutors.

Julian stepped back, his face turning ashen white. "What... what is this?"

"I didn't just call my private security yesterday, Julian," Clare said, taking a step toward him. "I called the Assistant Director of the FBI. I handed over the wiretransfer records, the DNA reports, and Sarah Jenkins' personal diary—which my team found hidden in her camp this afternoon. She documented every single call you made to her."

The grand front doors of the mansion burst open. Heavy tactical footsteps echoed down the grand hallway as federal agents flooded into the dining room.

"Julian Creswell," the lead agent announced, drawing a pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal kidnapping, conspiracy, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice."

Julian looked at Clare, his hands shaking as the agents grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "Clare! Please! We can talk about this! I can give you whatever you want!"

Clare didn't answer. She turned her back on him, walking toward the grand staircase, without giving the man who had stolen six years of her life another single glance.
