Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Sarah

Two months later, Clare decided it was time to close the final chapter of their past.

Though Sarah Jenkins had been an accomplice in the abduction six years ago, Clare had learned through the FBI's investigation that Sarah had ultimately refused to carry out Julian’s most horrific order—to eliminate the children when the legal pressure grew too high. Instead, Sarah had cut off all contact with Julian, taken the twins, and hid in the deepest shadows of Los Angeles, choosing a life of homelessness and poverty to keep the girls alive.

Sarah had been a victim of her own terrible choices and addictions, but in her own broken, desperate way, she had kept Maya and Rose safe from Julian’s hitmen for five long years.

On a cool spring morning, Clare took the twins to a quiet, serene cemetery in the hills overlooking the ocean.

The grass was bright green, dotted with wildflowers. They walked down a stone path until they stopped in front of a modest, elegant marble headstone. Inscribed on the stone were the words:

SARAH JENKINS 1985 – 2026 May you find the peace you searched for.

Clare had purchased the plot and paid for a dignified burial service. She wanted her daughters to have closure, to know that the woman who had raised them in the dark was not merely a monster, but a human being who had tried to protect them in the end.

Rose stepped forward and placed a small bouquet of yellow daisies on top of the fresh grass.

"Goodbye, Mama Sarah," Rose whispered softly. "We have a big house now. And shoes. We aren't cold anymore."

Lily stood beside Clare, holding her hand tightly. "Do you think she can hear us?" Lily asked, looking up at Clare.

"I think she knows you are safe now, Lily," Clare said gently, kneeling beside her. "And I think she can finally rest."

Lily nodded slowly, a sense of deep, mature acceptance settling over her small face. She turned away from the grave and looked out at the vast blue ocean sparkling under the morning sun.

"Can we go home now, Mom?" Lily asked.

It was the first time Lily had called her "Mom."

Clare froze, her heart swelling so intensely she thought it might burst with love. She looked down at her daughter, tears shining in her eyes.

"Yes, my baby," Clare whispered, pulling both girls close to her chest. "Let's go home."
