Chapter 5 - The War for Truth

Though Julian Creswell was in federal custody, the nightmare was far from over.

The news of the billionaire’s arrest broke across global media like a tidal wave. Headlines screamed across newspapers and digital screens: "CRESWELL BANKING TYCOON ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING LAURON TWINS," "SIX-YEAR MYSTERY SOLVED," and "THE BAREFOOT HEIRNESSES OF LOS ANGELES."

The media circus outside Clare’s Bel-Air gates was suffocating. Dozens of news vans, helicopters, and paparazzi camped out day and night, aiming long lenses at the windows, hoping to catch a glimpse of the two young girls whose story had captivated the world.

Inside the mansion, Clare fought a war on two fronts: protecting her daughters' fragile mental state and defending them against the legal machinations of Julian’s powerful allies.

In the formal study, Clare sat behind a large oak desk surrounded by her legal team, led by Victoria Sterling—the most feared family and corporate attorney in California.

"Julian’s legal team is aggressive, Clare," Victoria said, dropping a thick stack of court filings onto the desk. "They’re filing motions for bail, claiming Julian is a high-profile citizen with health issues. More dangerously, his lawyers are trying to challenge your legal custody of Rose."

Clare’s eyes snapped up. "On what grounds?"

"Because Rose was never officially registered as your child at birth," Victoria explained grimly. "The fraudulent birth certificate filed by Apex Medical six years ago lists only one live birth—Maya. Julian’s lawyers are arguing that until a full, formal state paternity and maternity trial is completed, Rose must be placed in a neutral foster facility under state supervision."

"Over my dead body," Clare said, her voice dripping with venom. "They want to take Rose away from me again? Using a legal loophole created by the very fraud Julian committed?"

"The judge assigned to the preliminary custody hearing is Judge Harrison," Victoria added nervously. "He was appointed to the bench ten years ago... with heavy campaign funding from Creswell-owned PACs."

Clare leaned back in her leather chair, her mind working at lightning speed. "Then we don't play by their rules, Victoria. If Judge Harrison is in Julian’s pocket, we make sure the entire world is watching his courtroom."

Meanwhile, upstairs in the nursery, a different kind of struggle was taking place.

Lily and Rose were sitting on a plush play mat surrounded by hundreds of expensive toys, dollhouses, and stuffed animals. Yet, they sat in the corner, playing with a single, battered cardboard box they had brought with them from the streets.

Dr. Vance sat quietly on a small wooden chair nearby, watching them gently. Clare walked into the room, abandoning her stress at the doorway, and sat beside her daughters on the floor.

"Why are you playing with the box, sweethearts?" Clare asked gently, touching Lily’s soft hair.

Lily looked up, her dark eyes solemn. "The toys are too soft. We don't know how to play with them. If we break them, will the man come back and take them away?"

Clare felt a sharp pain in her chest. The trauma of five years of poverty and fear wasn't going to vanish overnight just because they were surrounded by silk and gold.

"No one is going to take anything away, my loves," Clare said, taking both of their hands into hers. "And even if you break every single toy in this room, I won't be angry. Toys can be replaced. You can never be replaced."

Rose leaned her head against Clare’s arm. "Mama... can we go outside? We miss the sky."

Clare looked out the window at the flashing lights of the media helicopters buzzing over the tree line. The world outside was dangerous, loud, and intrusive. But looking into her daughters' hopeful eyes, she knew she couldn't keep them hidden in a gilded cage forever.

"Yes," Clare said, a fierce determination swelling in her heart. "We will go outside. Together."
