Chapter 1 - The Groom’s Dressing Room

The sharp, rhythmic knocking echoed against the heavy oak door of the preparation room.
"Daniel?" Rebecca’s voice sounded muffled, but the insistence behind it was unmistakable. "The venue manager says we need to open the main doors now. What are you doing in there?"
I sat frozen in front of my laptop, my fingers hovering over the trackpad. On the screen, the video frame remained paused on my daughter’s tear-stained face, her body slumped against our kitchen island while Rebecca stood over her, her expression twisted into something cold and unrecognizable. The sound of that slap—and the chilling promise that my money would be hers before I ever understood—was still ringing in my ears.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct I had as a former corporate investigator flared to life. I wasn't just a groom waiting to walk down the aisle; I was a target in a long-term, calculated trap.
"Daniel?" The door handle jiggled. "Is everything alright?"
I closed the video player, pulled the USB flash drive from the port, and slipped it into the lining of my vest pocket. I closed the laptop screen, took a deep, steadying breath, and looked in the mirror. My face was pale, my jaw tight. I forced my muscles to relax, adjusting my lapel as if nothing had happened.
I walked over and unlocked the door.
Rebecca stood in the hallway, her silk veil draped over her shoulders like a spider's web. Behind her, two bridesmaids held bouquets of white roses, looking slightly anxious.
"There you are," Rebecca said, her eyes immediately scanning my face, my hands, and then peering past my shoulder into the room. "Why did you lock the door? Is something wrong?"
"Just a little pre-wedding jitter," I said, offering a tight, practiced smile. "And I was checking on Emily."
At the sound of my daughter’s name, Rebecca’s eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. It was a subtle micro-expression, but now that my eyes were opened, I saw it with terrifying clarity.
"I told you, darling, Emily has a terrible migraine," Rebecca said, resting a soft, manicured hand against my chest. "She called me an hour ago weeping because she couldn't make it. It’s sad, but you know how delicate she’s been since her divorce. We shouldn't let it ruin our special day."
She’s lying, I thought. She hurt my daughter, lied about her whereabouts, and is now framing her as mentally unstable.
"Of course," I replied, forcing my voice to sound smooth. "Where is Noah?"
"Oh, your sister Sarah took him into the ballroom," Rebecca lied seamlessly. "He was getting a bit fussy."
Another lie. Noah had told me himself that Emily was at Sarah's house—not home in bed. Rebecca was trying to isolate me, keeping me away from my family until the marriage license was signed and sealed.
"I just need to step into the restroom for a quick moment," I said, backing away slightly. "Go ahead to the aisle. I'll be right behind you."
Rebecca studied me for two long seconds. Her smile didn't reach her eyes. "Don't keep me waiting at the altar, Daniel. It wouldn't look good."
As she turned and walked toward the grand ballroom doors, I didn't head to the restroom. I slipped down the service hallway, pulled out my phone, and dialed my sister Sarah's private number.
"Daniel?" Sarah answered on the second ring, her voice tight with panic. "Thank God. Are you alone?"
"Sarah, where is Emily?"
"She’s at my house, Daniel," Sarah whispered, her voice shaking. "We have a private physician here treating her. She has a severe concussion and bruises across her jaw. Rebecca attacked her in your house last night when Emily confronted her about the offshore transfers. Emily made Noah promise to give you the drive if she didn't show up."
A cold rage, purer and sharper than anything I had ever felt, washed over me.
"Is Noah safe?" I asked.
May you like
"He's right here with us. I picked him up from the hotel valet five minutes after he gave you the drive."
"Good," I said, looking down the corridor toward the music beginning to play in the ballroom. "Keep the doors locked. I'm going to finish this."
