Chapter 2 - The Staged Vows

The doors of the grand ballroom swung open, and the organ began to play the traditional processional march. Ninety guests—business associates, lifelong friends, and distant relatives—stood up, smiling toward the back of the room.
Rebecca stood at the head of the aisle, looking like a picture-perfect bride. She held her bouquet of white orchids, her face illuminated by the soft light of crystal chandeliers.
I walked down the aisle slowly, every step deliberate. To anyone watching, I was a nervous, overwhelmed sixty-year-old groom marrying a stunning forty-five-year-old woman five years after losing his wife to cancer. But under my polished tuxedo, my mind was racing like a supercomputer.
If I created a scene right now, Rebecca would play the victim. She would claim I was suffering from severe emotional stress, call her high-powered attorneys, and execute whatever contingency plan she had already set up. The drive had bank statements and video, but I needed to know the full extent of her network before I struck.
I reached the altar and took her hands. Her fingers were cold.
"You look handsome," she whispered, her smile radiant for the audience.
"And you look calculating," I thought, but aloud I said, "You take my breath away."
The officiant began the ceremony. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to unite Daniel Vance and Rebecca Sterling in holy matrimony..."
As the minister spoke, I subtly glanced toward the front row. Sitting on Rebecca's side was her "brother," Julian—a man she had introduced to me eighteen months ago as an independent financial advisor. Beside him was her long-time attorney, Vance Croft.
Looking at them now, the pieces began falling into place with terrifying alignment. Julian was the one who had recommended I transfer a portion of my technology firm’s patent portfolio into an offshore holding company for "tax optimization." Vance was the one who had drafted our prenuptial agreement—an agreement I had signed six months ago while still blinded by romance.
"Do you, Daniel, take Rebecca to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
The minister looked at me. The entire room went quiet, waiting for my response.
Rebecca’s grip on my hands tightened slightly. Her eyes held a subtle, threatening edge—a quiet reminder that ninety influential people were watching.
I looked at her, staring straight through her gorgeous blue eyes into the mercenary soul underneath.
"I do," I said clearly.
A collective sign of happiness rustled through the crowd.
"And do you, Rebecca, take Daniel..."
"I do," she interrupted, not even waiting for the minister to finish.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Rebecca leaned in, pressing her lips against mine. To her, that kiss was the signature on a multi-million-dollar acquisition. To me, it was the opening bell of a war.
As we walked back down the aisle holding hands, guests clapped and cheered. Rebecca beamed, waving at the crowd.

"We did it, darling," she murmured under her breath.
"Yes," I whispered back, feeling the hard metal of the USB drive pressed against my chest. "We certainly did."
