Chapter 3 - The Signing

The marriage license was waiting on a silver tray in the executive holding room behind the ballroom.

Julian and Vance Croft were already standing inside, holding glasses of vintage champagne. When Rebecca and I walked in, Julian grinned, stepping forward to slap me on the shoulder.

"Congratulations, Daniel! Welcome to the family," Julian said smoothly. "Now, let's get the paperwork finalized so you two can enjoy the reception."

Vance Croft uncapped a gold fountain pen and laid the official marriage certificate on the mahogany desk. "Just need your signature here, Daniel, and Rebecca’s here. I’ll personally deliver it to the county clerk’s office on Monday morning."

I looked down at the document. Signing this meant she was legally my wife under state law.

"Before I sign," I said, keeping my tone light and conversational, "I was thinking about the estate trust updates we discussed last week, Vance."

Vance paused, exchanging a swift, almost imperceptible glance with Rebecca. "The primary trust structure? We can handle those modifications after the honeymoon, Daniel."

"No," I replied, pulling out the desk chair and sitting down slowly. "I think today is the best time. Given that Emily couldn't be here due to her... condition, I feel strongly about ensuring my grandchildren's educational trusts are irrevocably secured first."

Rebecca stepped up behind my chair, resting her hands lightly on my shoulders. Her fingers pressed into my neck muscles with a gentle, warning pressure.

"Daniel, sweetie, this isn't the time for business," she said softly into my ear. "Our guests are waiting for the first dance. Sign the certificate, and we can deal with lawyers on Monday."

I turned my head slightly to look at her. "Are you in a rush, Rebecca?"

"Of course not," she said, though a tiny muscle in her jaw twitched. "I just want our wedding day to be about us, not paperwork."

"The marriage isn't legal until this document is signed and witnessed, correct, Vance?" I asked, looking up at the lawyer.

"Technically, yes," Vance replied carefully. "The ceremony is ceremonial until the certificate is executed by both parties and the officiant."

"Excellent," I said. I picked up the pen, held it over the line, and then deliberately set it back down on the blotter. "I need five minutes to check on Emily before I put pen to paper. I can't enjoy a first dance knowing my daughter is sick."

Rebecca’s face darkened instantly. The sweet, blushing bride mask slipped, revealing the sharp, predatory edge beneath.

"Daniel," she said, her voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous whisper. "You are being utterly ridiculous. Your daughter is a thirty-year-old woman throwing a tantrum because her father moved on. You are not walking out of this room to call her."

"Is that a demand, Rebecca?" I asked softly, standing up to face her.

Julian stepped forward, blocking the door. "Hey, Daniel, let's all take a breath here. Rebecca just wants today to go smoothly."

I looked at Julian, then at Vance, then at my new "wife." I was trapped in a room with three conspirators who thought they had me completely cornered.

"Out of my way, Julian," I said calmly.

"Daniel, sit down and sign the paper," Rebecca commanded, her posture rigid. "You don't want to make a scene that destroys your firm's reputation, do you?"

I smiled—a slow, cold smile that caught all three of them off guard.

"My reputation can survive a scene, Rebecca," I said. "Can yours survive an audit?"
