Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Ledger

By 8:00 p.m., the rain outside had turned into a howling gale.

Inside the third-floor master wing of the Cross mansion, the atmosphere was vastly different from the cold, sterile environment it had been for years. A roaring fire crackled in the wide brick fireplace. A large tray of hot soup, warm rolls, and fresh fruit sat on the coffee table.

Dr. Vance, the Cross family’s trusted personal physician for thirty years, set down his medical briefcase after drawing a small blood sample from little Lily, who was now sleeping peacefully on the plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a oversized cashmere blanket.

Dr. Vance looked up at Daniel, who was pacing back and forth near the window, a glass of untouched scotch in his hand.

"The expedited lab results will be ready by midnight, Daniel," Dr. Vance said softly, wiping his spectacles with a cloth. "But between you and me... as someone who delivered Michael thirty-four years ago... I don't need a lab test to tell me who that child belongs to. She has his exact ear structure, his skin tone, and the distinct widow's peak line. She is Michael’s daughter without a shadow of a doubt."

Daniel closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the cool windowpane. "If she is Michael's daughter... why did Michael keep her hidden from me, Antonio? We were brothers. We loved each other. Why didn't he trust me?"

Dr. Vance sighed, snapping his medical bag shut. "Michael came to see me four months before his crash, Daniel. He was terrified. He said he had discovered massive accounting discrepancies in the Cross Foundation's offshore trust accounts—funds that were supposed to be managed by your late uncle, Richard Cross, and your former financial director, Marcus Vance... Vanessa’s father."

Daniel snapped his head around, his eyes turning dangerous. "Marcus Vance?"

"Michael believed someone was embezzling millions from the foundation," Dr. Vance explained quietly. "He told me he was gathering evidence, but he started receiving anonymous death threats. When Elena became pregnant, Michael realized that if his enemies knew he had an heir, the baby would become a target. He vowed to keep Elena and the child invisible until he could expose the corruption."

A cold, deadly realization began to take shape in Daniel's mind.

Four years ago, Michael’s car hadn't just spun off the cliff due to rain.

It had been tampered with.

And Michael’s death wasn't a tragic accident—it was a pre-meditated murder executed to protect a billion-dollar embezzlement scheme.

"Where are Michael's personal ledgers?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm.

"Elena might know," Dr. Vance said, gesturing toward the adjoining sitting room where Elena was quietly folding Lily’s small clothes.

Daniel walked into the sitting room, closing the heavy oak door behind him. Elena stood up immediately, looking nervous.

"Daniel... is everything alright?"

"Elena," Daniel said, taking a seat across from her. "Dr. Vance told me about the accounting discrepancies Michael found before he died. Did Michael leave anything with you? A flash drive, a notebook, safe deposit keys?"

Elena’s hand instinctively went to her neck. She pulled a simple silver chain from beneath her collar. Hanging on the chain was a small, ornate brass key shaped like a vintage clock hand.

"Michael gave me this three days before he died," Elena whispered, her fingers clutching the brass key. "He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should never open the box it belongs to unless I was in the presence of someone I trusted with my life."

"Where is the box?" Daniel asked.

"It’s hidden in the clocktower of the old studio Michael rented near the docks," Elena answered. "He bought the studio under a fake name—David Miller."

Before Daniel could respond, his encrypted smartphone buzzed violently on the table.

He picked it up. It was a text message from an unknown, encrypted burner number. Attached was a photo.

The photo was a live, high-resolution telephoto shot of the Cross mansion’s front gates, zoomed in on the window of the room where Lily was currently sleeping.

Beneath the image was a short message:

Hand over the girl and Elena by midnight, or the Cross family ends tonight. You have four hours, Daniel.

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid ice.

Marcus Vance and his disgraced daughter weren't just going to accept being kicked out. They knew the moment Daniel confirmed Lily’s identity, the entire embezzlement conspiracy would unravel, exposing their criminal empire and putting them behind bars for life.

They were moving to eliminate the evidence—and the child—before sunrise.

Daniel looked over at the sleeping three-year-old girl, then at Elena, whose face had gone pale as she watched Daniel’s expression change.

"Daniel? What is it?" Elena asked, terror creeping into her voice.

Daniel tucked his phone into his pocket, his face hardening into an impenetrable mask of absolute war.

"Arthur!" Daniel called out, stepping back into the hallway.

The chief butler appeared instantly from the shadows. "Yes, Sir?"

"Initiate Protocol Blackout," Daniel ordered coldly. "Evacuate all non-essential staff through the subterranean utility tunnel. Call my private security team, Command Alpha. I want snipers on the roof, tactical units at every perimeter gate, and armored vehicles prepped at the rear entrance."

"Understood, Mr. Cross," Arthur nodded grimly, reaching for his internal radio.

Daniel turned to Elena, taking her hands in a grip of iron.

"You and Lily are leaving with me right now," Daniel said. "We are going to Michael’s studio to get those ledgers. Tonight, we finish what my brother started."
