Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vances

Two days later.

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan was swarmed by hundreds of news crews, reporters, and law enforcement officers.

The news had rocked the financial world: Marcus Vance—the prominent billionaire financier—had survived the boat explosion with severe burns and was now facing charges of grand embezzlement, corporate treason, racketeering, and murder in the first degree for the death of Michael Cross.

His daughter, Vanessa Vance, had been apprehended at JFK Airport while attempting to board a private jet to Dubai using a forged Spanish passport.

Inside the grand courtroom, sitting behind the prosecution table, were Daniel Cross, Elena Ruiz, and little Lily.

Lily was dressed in a clean, soft blue dress, sitting on a high velvet cushion between Daniel and her mother. She held a brand new sketchpad Daniel had bought her, drawing colorful pictures of boats and rainbows with gel pens.

When Vanessa Vance was led into the courtroom in orange prison jumpsuits and heavy handcuffs, her face was sunken, her eyes dark, and her high-society vanity completely shattered.

As she passed the prosecution table, her bitter eyes locked onto Elena and Lily.

"You ruined my life, you filthy little servant," Vanessa hissed under her breath.

Daniel stood up instantly, stepping between Vanessa and Elena, his immense presence shutting down her toxic gaze like an iron shield.

"You ruined your own life, Vanessa," Daniel said coldly, his voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "You chose greed over humanity. Now you will spend the rest of your days paying for every tear my niece ever shed."

The presiding judge slammed his gavel down.

"Silence in the court!" the judge ordered sternly. "The defendant will take her seat!"

The trial lasted less than two hours.

With the overwhelming mountain of evidence provided by Michael’s ledgers, the recorded confession on the cassette tape, and bank records showing wire transfers directly to Marcus Vance's shell companies, the verdict was unanimous.

Marcus Vance was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Vanessa Vance was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary for conspiracy to commit murder, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.

As Vanessa was being led away in chains, weeping hysterically and begging for mercy, she looked back one last time.

She saw Daniel gently lifting three-year-old Lily into his arms. The little girl reached out her tiny hand and wiped a speck of dust from Daniel’s suit lapel, giving her uncle a sweet, angelic smile.

Vanessa realized then, with agonizing clarity, that the humble maid’s child she had tried to crush beneath her heel was now the sole heir to a five-billion-dollar empire—and the undisputed heart of the Cross family.
