Chapter 2 - The Four-Day Disappearance

For four days, Daniel Meridian did not return to Massachusetts General Hospital.

He convinced himself he was playing the long game. In his mind, leaving Elena alone in her hospital room was a calculated display of power—a punishment for her daring to call his phone thirty-two times while he was standing beside Celeste.

He spent those four days dining at high-end steakhouses, attending press briefings for the new luxury development, and hosting Celeste at the Meridian private country club. He sent no flowers, placed no calls, and checked no updates on the three infants struggling in the NICU.

"Let her sweat," Daniel told his VP of Operations over lunch on Wednesday. "Elena needs to remember who holds the keys to her lifestyle. If I run to her every time she has a medical episode, she’ll think she controls me."

By Thursday afternoon, feeling thoroughly pleased with his psychological dominance, Daniel decided it was time to play the benevolent husband. He instructed his assistant to buy a standard bouquet of grocery-store hydrangeas—Elena’s least favorite flower, though he had never bothered to remember that—and drove his sports car toward the hospital.

He strutted through the sliding glass doors of Massachusetts General with his coat unbuttoned, a smirking expression on his face. He anticipated finding Elena red-eyed, gaunt, and weeping, ready to apologize for her "dramatic behavior" during his important gala.

He took the private elevator to the eleventh floor—the VIP maternity wing.

When the doors slid open, Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.

The floor was completely quiet, but it was not empty. Standing outside Suite 1104 were two towering men in immaculate, dark charcoal three-piece suits. They didn't wear hospital badges. They wore small, silver lapel pins bearing a crest Daniel recognized instantly: The Vale Estate Shield.

Daniel walked up, his brows furrowing in irritation. "Excuse me. What is this? Move aside."

The guard on the left didn't flinch. "State your name."

"State my name?" Daniel laughed incredulously. "I’m Daniel Meridian! CEO of Meridian Holdings! I’m the husband of the woman in this room! Get out of my way before I have the hospital board fire both of you."

The second guard checked a digital tablet held in his white-gloved hand. His expression remained completely devoid of emotion.

"Daniel Meridian," the guard read aloud. "You are listed on the restricted entry registry."

"What did you just say?" Daniel snapped, stepping forward aggressively.

The guard placed a massive, broad palm flat against Daniel’s chest, halting him in his tracks with effortless force. "You are denied access to this unit by court order and primary beneficiary mandate."

"Court order?!" Daniel yelled, his face flushing deep crimson. "Are you out of your mind? My wife just gave birth! Where is Dr. Patel? Get the chief of medicine down here right now!"

A floor nurse walked out from the central nurses' station holding a clip board. She stopped, staring at Daniel with a look of unadulterated disgust that made his skin prickle.

"Is there a problem here, gentlemen?" the nurse asked the guards.

"This individual is attempting unauthorized access to Suite 1104," the guard reported.

Daniel spun around to face the nurse. "Nurse! Tell these hired thugs who I am! I am Elena Vale’s husband! I’ve been away on urgent corporate business for a few days. I’m here to see my wife and my children!"

The nurse adjusted her glasses, looking at Daniel as if he were a bug she wanted to crush beneath her shoe.

"Mr. Meridian," she said, her voice dripping with icy contempt. "Mrs. Vale left four days ago. Isn't she home?"

The hallway seemed to tilt beneath Daniel’s feet.

"Left... four days ago?" Daniel stammered, his confident smirk vanishing instantly. "What are you talking about? She had an emergency C-section four days ago! She almost bled to death!"

"Precisely," the nurse replied coldly. "She lost three liters of blood while you turned your phone off to cut a birthday cake. Mrs. Vale signed her own discharge papers seventy-two hours ago, transferred her children via private medical transport to a specialized facility, and left."

"Where did she go?!" Daniel shouted, grabbing the edge of the nurse's desk. "Where are my babies?!"

"That is none of your concern, sir," the guard interjected, pulling Daniel’s hands off the desk with a iron grip. "You have been served."

From inside his jacket, the guard pulled a thick, white Manila envelope and slammed it hard against Daniel’s chest.

"What is this?" Daniel gasped, his breath ragged.

"That is a emergency temporary restraining order, a petition for emergency full custody of Maya, Leo, and Iris Vale, and a summons to appear before the Massachusetts Chancery Court at nine o'clock tomorrow morning," the guard said plainly. "If you attempt to contact Mrs. Vale or approach any property owned by the Vale Master Trust, you will be arrested immediately."

Daniel stared at the heavy envelope in his hands. His fingers began to shake violently.

"She... she can't do this," Daniel whispered, his voice pitching high with sudden, hysterical panic. "She's an accountant! She's my wife! She doesn't have the legal authority to ban me from my own home!"

"I suggest you read the back page, Mr. Meridian," the nurse said, turning her back on him. "Your wife isn't just your accountant anymore. She’s your landlord."
