Chapter 5 - The Fall of Celeste

Deprived of his home, his position, and his bank accounts, Daniel had only one place left to run.

He drove like a lunatic to Celeste Arden’s luxury penthouse in the Back Bay district. He didn't bother using the elevator intercom; he pushed past the doorman and hammered violently on the polished mahogany door of Suite 20B.

"Celeste! Open up! Celeste!" Daniel yelled, looking disheveled, his tie crooked, his eyes bloodshot.

The door unlocked slowly.

Celeste stood in the entryway wearing a silk robe, holding a glass of white wine. But she didn't look happy to see him. Her face was tense, her sharp eyes scanning his rumpled clothes with immediate suspicion.

"Daniel?" she snapped, standing in the doorway to block him. "What are you doing here? Why are you making such a scene?"

"It’s Elena," Daniel panted, pushing his way past her into the opulent living room. "She’s gone insane, Celeste! She locked me out of the house, she summoned an emergency board meeting, and she froze the corporate accounts! She found out about the six million!"

Celeste froze. The glass of wine in her hand tilted slightly. "What did you just say?"

"The transfer to your philanthropy foundation," Daniel said frantically, pacing across the velvet rug. "She tracked it! She had forensic auditors waiting for me at headquarters! They terminated my CEO contract, Celeste! I don't have access to my primary funds!"

Celeste’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, slit-like glare. "What do you mean you don't have access to your funds? What about the twelve million for the Arden Riviera project?"

"It's frozen!" Daniel yelled, throwing his hands in the air. "Everything is held in her family's trust! I didn't know she had the legal power to pull Clause 12-B! We need to call your legal team right now. We can use your foundation's capital to hire a defense team and counter-sue her for—"

"My foundation's capital?" Celeste interrupted, her voice dropping into a cold, terrifying hiss.

"Yes! The six million I transferred to you!"

Celeste let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Daniel, are you completely stupid? That money isn't in my foundation anymore. It was cleared into my private asset holding firm yesterday morning."

Daniel stopped pacing. He stared at her, his brow furrowing. "What? Why would you move it?"

"Because I have bills to pay," Celeste replied coldly, walking over to her glass desk and picking up a slender leather envelope. "And because I knew the moment your quiet little wife woke up from her surgery, she was going to gut you like a fish."

Daniel felt a sudden, sickening drop in his stomach. "Celeste... what are you talking about? We're partners."

"Partners?" Celeste smirked, taking a slow sip of her wine. "Daniel, darling, you were a convenience. You were a gullible, vain idiot with access to a massive corporate expense account. Did you really think I loved you? Did you really think I gave a damn about your pathetic little hospitality empire?"

Daniel took a step back, feeling as though he had been hit by a freight train. "Celeste... I left my wife for you. I ignored my children being born for your birthday!"

"And that makes you a monster, doesn't it?" Celeste spat back without an ounce of remorse. "What kind of man leaves his wife in an emergency delivery room to go cut a cake? You're a fool, Daniel. And now you're a broke fool."

Before Daniel could respond, three sharp knocks echoed at the penthouse door.

Celeste frowned. "Who is that?"

She opened the door. Standing outside were two officers from the Massachusetts State Police, accompanied by an agent from the Internal Revenue Service.

"Celeste Arden?" the federal agent asked, holding up a badge.

Celeste’s posture stiffened instantly. "Yes?"

"We have a warrant for your arrest, issued by the Federal District Court of Massachusetts," the agent announced. "You are being charged with wire fraud, money laundering, and receipt of stolen trust capital in connection with Arden Luxury Philanthropy."

Celeste’s face turned completely white. "This is absurd! I haven't stolen anything! This was a corporate grant!"

"The grant was executed via forged signatures provided by Mr. Daniel Meridian," the agent said, stepping into the apartment and snapping silver handcuffs onto Celeste’s manicured wrists. "And Mrs. Elena Vale has provided full bank ledgers and digital affidavits proving you were fully aware the funds were embezzled."

"Daniel!" Celeste shrieked, struggling against the officer's grip as her wine glass shattered on the hardwood floor. "You idiot! You led them right to me!"

"I... I didn't know!" Daniel stammered, backing away into the corner of the room in total terror.

"Mr. Meridian?" the second state trooper said, turning toward him. "You might as well come with us too. The prosecutor has a few questions about those forged signatures."

As the officers dragged Celeste out of the penthouse, kicking and screaming obscenities, Daniel sank onto the couch, putting his head in his hands.

The glittering world he had built on lies, cruelty, and betrayal had completely collapsed around him in less than seventy-two hours. And sitting at the center of the web, pulling every single string with flawless precision, was the wife he had called "timid."
