Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Wednesday, 11:00 AM.
The executive boardroom of Vale Global was bathed in bright, cold morning sunlight.
Marcus Kane—a sharp-featured attorney in a five-thousand-dollar suit—sat at the mahogany table, snapping his leather briefcase open with an air of smug superiority. He believed he was meeting with a mid-level corporate receiver who would be eager to process a multi-million-dollar equity injection without asking uncomfortable questions.
The glass doors opened.
Elena walked in alone, wearing a tailored charcoal wool suit. She carried no briefcase, no tablet—only a single sheets of paper in her hand.
Marcus Kane stood up, offering a practiced, slick smile. "Mrs. Vale. I was expecting your VP of Acquisitions, Mr. Davies."
"Mr. Davies is busy, Mr. Kane," Elena said smoothly, taking her seat at the head of the table. "And since your client is attempting to acquire nine percent of my company, I felt it appropriate to handle the transaction personally."
Kane’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, leaning back in his chair. "Well, that is an honor. As I outlined in our preliminary dossier, Helios Limited is prepared to offer twenty percent above current market valuation for the class-B shares currently held in the estate reserve."
"It's a very generous offer, Mr. Kane," Elena replied, laying her single sheet of paper flat on the table. "There's only one small technical issue."
"An issue?" Kane asked, eyebrow raised. "Our capital is fully cleared through Credit Suisse."
"Your capital was cleared through Credit Suisse using a secondary routing note issued by Vane-Pharm Capital Subsidiary 4 in 2015," Elena said, her voice completely even, devoid of emotion. "A subsidiary that was declared an illegal criminal enterprise by the Federal District Court during the Blackwood prosecutions."
Kane froze. The color slowly drained from his ears. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. Helios is an independent Swiss entity."
"Helios is a shell entity created by Dr. James Richardson to hide thirty million dollars of illegal human drug trial profits," Elena corrected, pulling a small silver drive from her pocket and sliding it across the table. "And sitting on that drive is the complete financial ledger of every transaction executed by Marcus Kane Law Offices for the past six years."
Kane stared at the silver drive as if it were a venomous snake resting on the mahogany polish.
"How... how did you get that?" Kane stammered, his polished arrogance vanishing instantly.
"I told you two years ago when I took over this company," Elena said, leaning forward, her dark eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "I am a forensic accountant. You tried to sneak tainted capital through a secondary broker in Frankfurt. Did you really think I wouldn't audit the routing chain?"
Kane swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached for his briefcase. "This meeting is over. We will withdraw the purchase offer."
"You can't withdraw the offer, Mr. Kane," Elena said softly.
"And why not?" Kane demanded, standing up abruptly.
The double doors of the boardroom clicked open behind him.
Four federal agents from the Department of Justice, accompanied by Captain Frank Vance—the head of security for the Blackwood Estate—stepped into the room.
"Because the moment you initiated the wire transfer through the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston this morning," Captain Vance announced, "you committed an overt act of federal money laundering."
The lead DOJ agent stepped forward, pulling a warrant from his coat. "Marcus Kane, you are under arrest for conspiracy to launder criminal proceeds, obstruction of justice, and tax fraud."
Kane backed away toward the window, looking at Elena in absolute horror. "You... you set a trap!"
"No, Mr. Kane," Elena said, standing up calmly and smoothing her wool jacket. "You built a trap nine years ago when you stole from sick people. I simply closed the door."
As the federal agents snapped handcuffs onto Kane’s wrists and dragged him out of the room, Captain Vance walked over to Elena’s side, offering a respectful nod.

"Excellent work, Mrs. Vale," Vance said. "The Blackwood family sends their regards. Robert Blackwood personally asked me to ensure that the Vance network's final attempt to resurface was permanently eliminated."
"Thank you, Captain," Elena smiled gently. "Tell Robert that the children's hospital construction will proceed on schedule."
