Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing Betrayal

The municipal courthouse was cold, grand, and filled with whispering journalists when I arrived the following morning.
News of the scandal had already leaked to the local press: “Prominent Logistics Executive Arrested for Brutal Coffee Assault & Multi-Million Dollar Trust Fraud.”
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Evelyn and two private security guards I had hired for protection. I wore a tailored navy-blue coat and a white silk scarf gently wrapped around my neck, framing the bandage on my face.
At 9:15 AM, the side door of the courtroom opened.
Trevor and Paige were led inside by two armed guards, wearing dark blue county jail jumpsuits with heavy chains linking their wrists to their waists.
Trevor looked devastated. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his posture hunched over in shame. Paige was sobbing uncontrollably, her designer makeup completely smeared, clutching her public defender’s arm like a drowning person.
When Trevor saw me sitting in the front row, his lips trembled. He tried to speak, but the guard nudged him forward toward the defense table.
Judge Sarah Montgomery took her seat at the high wooden bench, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed the charging documents.
"We are here for the bail hearing in State v. Trevor Vance and Paige Vance," Judge Montgomery announced, her voice severe. "Counsel, present your arguments."
The state prosecutor stood up immediately. "Your Honor, the State requests that both defendants be held without bail pending trial. The primary defendant, Trevor Vance, executed a brutal physical attack against his wife, causing severe second-degree burns. Furthermore, the financial crimes division has uncovered an ongoing scheme involving corporate forgery, identity theft, and attempted theft of over six million dollars."
Trevor’s attorney, Pendelton, stood up frantically. "Your Honor! My client is a lifelong resident of this city! He has no prior criminal record! We request a reasonable bond of fifty thousand dollars. He poses no flight risk!"
Paige’s public defender stood up next. "Your Honor, my client, Paige, was merely a secondary party in her brother's business dealings. She had no knowledge of any physical violence! She should be released on her own recognizance!"
Suddenly, Paige turned on Trevor right there in the middle of the courtroom.
"That's a lie!" Paige screamed, her voice echoing violently off the high marble walls. "He knew everything! He told me Clara’s grandmother was old and stupid! He told me we would take the six million and move to Miami! He forced me to sign those shell company forms!"
"Paige, shut up!" Trevor yelled back, straining against his waist chains. "You were begging me for eighty thousand dollars every single day! You're the one who found the offshore account templates!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Montgomery slammed her wooden gavel down hard. BANG! BANG! BANG! "One more outburst from either defendant and I will hold you in summary contempt!"
The gallery gasped. Reporters were frantically scribbling notes in their pads.
I sat in the front row, watching the two siblings turn on each other like wild dogs trapped in a cage. The unity they had displayed in my kitchen twenty-four hours ago had dissolved into pure, desperate malice.
Judge Montgomery looked down at the defendants with total disgust.
"Given the horrific nature of the domestic violence captured on emergency recording, the severity of the victim's injuries, and the massive scale of the documented financial fraud," Judge Montgomery ruled, "bail for Trevor Vance is denied. He will remain in custody at the county correctional facility until trial."
Trevor gasped, his face draining of all color. "No! Your Honor, please!"
"As for Paige Vance," the judge continued, "bail is set at seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, cash only. Should she post bond, she will be fitted with an electronic tracking ankle monitor and placed under strict house arrest."
"Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars?!" Paige shrieked. "I don't have seven hundred dollars! Trevor, pay my bail! Pay it!"
"With what?!" Trevor yelled back bitterly as the guards grabbed their shoulders. "She froze all our accounts! We don't have a dime!"
As the guards dragged them toward the heavy holding doors, Trevor turned his head back toward me one last time.
"Clara! Please!" he screamed, tears finally breaking past his eyes. "I love you! Don't do this to me! Give me one more chance!"
I slowly stood up, pulled my scarf slightly higher to cover the edge of my burn bandage, and looked at him with icy indifference.

I didn't utter a single word.
The heavy steel door slammed shut behind them, locking them away from the world they had tried to steal from me.
