Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Legacy

Two months passed.
The healing process for my physical injuries was slow, but under the care of top dermatological specialists paid for by my protected trust, the burns on my cheek and neck began to fade into light, barely noticeable marks.
My emotional healing, however, was instantaneous.
With Trevor and Paige locked away awaiting trial, I took full legal and operational control of my grandmother's estate.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't asking permission from a husband who secretly despised me. I was managing a six-point-eight-million-dollar portfolio, working directly with senior financial advisors, real estate developers, and philanthropic directors.
I officially established the Eleanor Sterling Foundation for Domestic Abuse Survivors—a three-million-dollar fund dedicated to providing immediate legal representation, secure housing, and medical aid for women escaping abusive, financially controlling partners.
One sunny afternoon, I sat in my newly redecorated dining room—the very room where Trevor had thrown the coffee.
The old table was gone. The old flooring was replaced with brilliant white marble. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, filling the space with warmth and life.
Evelyn Ross sat across from me, sipping tea and laying down the final divorce decree signed by the court judge.
"It's official, Clara," Evelyn smiled brightly. "You are legally divorced. Your name is restored to Clara Sterling. The court has granted total forfeiture of all joint assets, and Trevor has been ordered to pay restitution of four hundred thousand dollars."
"How is he going to pay restitution from prison?" I asked with a soft smile.
"He won't," Evelyn chuckled. "Which means when his criminal sentence is complete, his wages will be garnished for the rest of his natural life."
"And the criminal trial?"
"Trevor’s attorney realized they had zero defense against the smartwatch recording and medical documentation," Evelyn explained. "He accepted a plea bargain this morning: eight years in state penitentiary without possibility of parole for five years."
"And Paige?"
"Paige pleaded guilty to second-degree financial fraud and grand larceny. She was sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to surrender her Miami condominium immediately."

I took a quiet sip of my tea, feeling an overwhelming, incredible sense of freedom wash over my body.
The dark chapter of my life was finally, completely closed.
