Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Nest

The executive elevator doors had barely closed behind Elena and the boys—whom Tobias had sent down to his private underground garage under the escort of his most trusted personal bodyguard, Vance—when the heavy double doors of his office burst open.
Margaret Marrow did not knock. She never knocked.
At sixty-four, the matriarch of the Marrow legacy looked like a statue sculpted from ice and marble. Her white hair was styled into a flawless chignon, her tailored ivory suit cost more than most people earned in a year, and her blue eyes were as sharp and unyielding as diamond blades.
"You let her leave," Margaret said, stepping into the office, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. She didn't look at Tobias; her eyes went straight to the coffee table, where two half-empty cups of water sat near a small, discarded blue cap.
Tobias stood up from his desk. The helpless father who had knelt on the floor three minutes ago vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless corporate titan who commanded Marrow Holdings.
"Get out of my office, Margaret," Tobias said, his tone devoid of warmth.
Margaret scoffed, pulling a pair of leather gloves from her hands. "Don't take that tone with me, Tobias. I did what you were too weak to do three years ago. I tracked that opportunistic little girl down. I saw the boys."
"They are my sons," Tobias growled, stepping around his desk, his broad shoulders blocking her view of the room.
"They are Marrow heirs!" Margaret corrected sharply, her voice ringing off the glass windows. "And they have spent three years living in a renovated farmhouse in Vermont like peasants! Do you have any idea what the board would do if they found out the future of this company was being raised by a woman who works thirty hours a week at a local community library?!"
Tobias felt a vein throb in his temple. "She raised them. Alone. Without a dime of my money."
"Because she’s proud and stupid!" Margaret snapped. "She hid them from you! She committed fraud! She deprived this family of its legacy! I have already retained the top three family law firms in Manhattan. By the end of the month, the court will declare her unfit, the boys will be placed in my custody at the Greenwich estate, and you can focus on running this company without her constant emotional sabotage."
Tobias took two slow, deliberate steps toward his mother. He was six-foot-two, towering over her, his shadow falling completely across her ivory suit.
"If you lay a single legal finger on Elena or my sons," Tobias said, his voice dropping into a register so low and dangerous that even Margaret froze, "I will sell every share of Marrow Holdings stock I own to Arthur Sterling. I will dismantle this firm block by block. I will leave you with nothing but your empty estate and your precious name."
Margaret stared at him, her pale eyes widening in genuine shock. "You're bluffing. You sacrificed your entire youth for this firm."
"Try me," Tobias whispered. "I lost three years with my boys because I was terrified of being like you and Dad. I will burn this city to the ground before I let you touch them."
Margaret drew herself up, recovering her composure with a bitter, condescending sneer. "You think you're protecting her, Tobias? Ask her about the money."

Tobias frowned. "What money?"
Margaret pulled a sleek black tablet from her leather handbag and tossed it onto his desk. "Ask your precious, innocent wife why five hundred thousand dollars was wired from a numbered account in the Cayman Islands into her private Vermont account three days before she left you. Ask her who paid for her clinic bills. She didn't hide those boys to protect them from your temper, Tobias. She hid them because she was paid to walk away."
