Chapter 5 - War Orders

By 4:00 AM, the rain outside had turned into a gentle, misting fog over the ocean.

Noah and Leo were back asleep in the master bedroom upstairs, tucked securely into a king-sized bed with Jax curled up at the foot of the mattress. Elena sat in the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a warm mug of milk, wearing one of Tobias’s oversized charcoal sweaters.

Tobias stood in his study, holding a secure satellite phone to his ear. His palms were bandaged in white medical tape.

"Vance," Tobias said, his tone no longer that of a grieving father, but of a general preparing for total annihilation. "Activate Protocol Seven."

On the other end of the line, Vance—a former Special Forces operative who had managed Tobias’s security for a decade—paused. "Protocol Seven, sir? That involves deploying the private forensic auditors into the family foundation accounts."

"I want every asset, every offshore account, every charitable trust, and every personal property registered to Margaret Marrow frozen by 8:00 AM," Tobias ordered coldly. "Contact Arthur Sterling. Tell him I’m accepting his offer to buy out her voting shares on the executive board."

"Sir," Vance warned quietly, "if you strip your mother of her board chair and freeze her assets, she will release the media package her public relations team prepared on Mrs. Marrow. They'll leak the custody battle to the Wall Street Journal before noon."

"Let her," Tobias replied, his eyes reflecting the cold gray light of the dawn breaking over the ocean. "Because at 9:00 AM, we file criminal charges against Margaret Marrow for identity theft, forgery of medical consent documents, and corporate embezzlement."

He hung up the phone, setting it on the desk.

Elena stepped quietly into the doorway of the study, watching him. "Tobias... she's your mother."

Tobias turned to look at her. The exhaustion on his face was undeniable, but beneath it lay an absolute, unbreakable clarity.

"She stopped being my mother the day she forged my name to murder my children, Elena," Tobias said evenly. "She treated my life like a board game and my family like disposable pieces. I let her control me for thirty-nine years because I was afraid of being alone. I'm not afraid anymore."

Elena walked across the room, stopping directly in front of him. She reached up, her fingers gently touching the side of his face, tracing the sharp line of his jaw.

"We have to go to court, don't we?" she asked softly.

"No," Tobias said, placing his bandaged hand over hers, holding it against his cheek. "We don't go to court to defend ourselves. We go to destroy her legal standing before she can ever bring a judge into our lives again. You and the boys are staying here. No one gets past Vance."

May you like

"And you?"

Tobias leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, taking a deep, shuddering breath of her lavender scent. "I'm going to Manhattan to finish what should have ended three years ago."
