Chapter 7 - The First Step

The afternoon sun warm on the deck of the Hamptons estate created a shimmering reflection off the Atlantic Ocean.

Tobias stood near the wooden railing, holding a cup of coffee. He was exhausted—his eyes bloodshot, his body aching from forty-eight hours without sleep—but for the first time in his life, the invisible iron band that had wrapped around his chest since childhood was gone.

The sliding glass door opened.

Elena stepped out, wearing a comfortable beige sweater and jeans. She walked over to the railing, leaning her elbows on the wood beside him, looking out at the water.

"Vance told me what happened in the city," Elena said softly.

"It's over," Tobias replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "Her legal team signed the settlement three hours ago. She surrendered all claims to the boys, forfeited her board seat, and agreed to a permanent restraining order in exchange for us dropping the federal wire fraud charges. She's moving to her villa in France on Monday. She won't ever come back."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to carry away three years of constant, agonizing terror. "I can finally stop looking over my shoulder."

"You never have to look over your shoulder again," Tobias promised gently. "Not while I'm breathing."

A sudden sound of small, pounding footsteps echoed across the wooden deck.

Leo came running out through the open door, holding a red plastic truck, with Jax trotting happily behind him.

"Daddy! Look!" Leo yelled, stopping three feet away, holding the truck up into the air with both hands. "The wheel comes off and goes back on! See?!"

Tobias felt a surge of warmth hit his chest so powerfully it almost brought him to his knees again. Daddy. Leo had just called him Daddy without being prompted, without hesitation, as naturally as if he had been saying it every day of his life.

Tobias set his coffee cup on the railing and dropped down onto his knees in front of his son.

"Show me how it works, Leo," Tobias said softly, his gray eyes shining with uncontainable pride.

Leo sat right down on the deck, cross-legged, and began explaining the mechanics of the plastic truck with intense, solemn concentration. Tobias listened to every single word as if it were the most critical corporate briefing he had ever attended.

Elena stood above them, watching her husband and her son sitting together in the sunlight.

For three years, she had believed that Tobias was incapable of love—that his heart was too cold, too damaged by his upbringing to ever hold a child. But watching him now, gently helping Leo snap the plastic wheel back into place, his eyes soft and filled with endless devotion, she realized the truth.

Tobias had never been incapable of love. He had just been trapped in a cage built by his mother. And now, the door was wide open.
