Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The news of Clare Ashford’s arrest hit the global financial markets like a bombshell.
By Monday morning, headlines across the world broadcasted the scandal: "GREENWICH ELITE SCANDAL: ASHFORD HEIRESS ARRESTED AT MARSH ESTATE ENGAGEMENT DINNER." Shares of Marsh Global Holdings experienced immediate volatility as speculative stories circulated regarding corporate fraud, hidden vaults, and ancient family feuds.
Julian called an emergency meeting of the Marsh Global Board of Directors at the corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
The high-rise boardroom was packed with senior board members, corporate attorneys, and major shareholders, all speaking in agitated tones. When Julian walked in, clad in a sharp charcoal suit, his face set in stone, the room immediately fell silent.
Julian took his place at the head of the polished conference table. Beside him stood Ethan Cole and the estate’s lead legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to the contractor).
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "I am aware of the rumors and panic that have filled the press over the last forty-eight hours. Today, I am here to give you the unvarnished truth."
For the next hour, Julian laid out every single detail of what had transpired. He revealed Clare Ashford's systematic attempt to infiltrate the company, the discovery of the hidden vault, the fraudulent work orders, and the recovery of his father's private journals.
He didn't hide his father's past mistakes. He laid out the documents showing the aggressive acquisitions Edward Marsh had carried out decades ago.
Gasps filled the room as several older board members recognized the names of companies that had been dismantled in the nineties.
"Julian," spoke up Richard Sterling, a senior director and longtime friend of Edward Marsh. "If these documents become public, the reputation of Marsh Global will be severely damaged. Class-action lawsuits from former competitors could tie up our liquidity for years! We must seal these records under corporate privilege immediately!"
Julian leaned forward, resting his hands on the table, fixing Sterling with a penetrating look.
"No, Richard," Julian declared firmly. "We will not cover this up."
"Are you insane?" Sterling demanded, standing up. "You are talking about exposing the firm to hundreds of millions of dollars in restitution liabilities! The stock will plummet!"
"The stock will recover because we will prove that Marsh Global operates with total integrity," Julian replied coolly. "My father recognized his mistakes before he died. He spent his final years building a private restitution fund to compensate every single family and firm that was wronged during the expansion era. I intend to honor his final wishes."
Julian motioned to Marcus Vance, who distributed thick packets to every board member.
"Starting today," Julian announced, "Marsh Global will establish the Edward Marsh Restitution & Ethics Foundation. We will voluntarily open our historical records to an independent audit led by federal regulators. Every asset that was wrongfully acquired will be compensated, and every victim's family will receive their rightful justice."
The board room erupted into hushed, fierce debate. Several conservative directors looked appalled, while younger members looked on with deep respect.
"And what about Clare Ashford and her associates?" another director asked.
"Miss Ashford is currently held without bail at the Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn," Ethan Cole spoke up. "Federal prosecutors have filed charges including wire fraud, corporate espionage, forgery, and grand larceny. Her uncle and accomplice, Arthur Ashford, was arrested two hours ago trying to board a private jet to Zurich."
Julian stood up, looking around the room. "My father built this company, but he left behind shadows that were exploited by people like Clare Ashford. I am clearing those shadows away. Anyone on this board who does not support total transparency is welcome to submit their resignation by five o'clock today."

Silence fell over the room once more. No one moved. No one offered a resignation.
Julian walked out of the boardroom, feeling a profound sense of clarity. The fight was far from over, but for the first time in his life, he was no longer running his father's company—he was running his company.
