Chapter 3 - The Spider's Web

Claire’s heart leaped into her throat. She didn't run—running would create noise, and noise meant guilt.

Instead, she snatched a feather duster from her apron pocket, stepped fluidly around the corner, and began vigorously dusting the framed oil painting on the wall, her face a mask of mild, dutiful surprise.

Margaret and Dr. Bell stepped around the corner, their eyes locking onto her instantly.

"Claire," Margaret said, her tone dripping with sudden, razor-sharp scrutiny. "What are you doing up in the west wing at this hour? Your morning duties are in the main dining room."

Claire turned, lowering the feather duster, bringing her hands together in a polite, slightly nervous posture. She let a touch of flustered embarrassment show on her face.

"I’m so sorry, Miss Margaret," Claire said, keeping her voice light and apologetic. "I was looking for the linen closet for the guest suites. The layout of this floor still confuses me, and I didn't want to disturb Mr. Callahan."

Dr. Bell stared at her, his eyes narrowed behind his wire-rimmed glasses, examining her face for any sign of deception. "How long have you been standing there, young lady?"

"Just a moment, sir," Claire lied smoothly, looking directly into the doctor's eyes with completely fake innocence. "I just walked up from the service stairs."

Margaret stepped closer, her eyes sweeping over Claire’s apron. "You know the rules regarding Mr. Noah's wing. It is to remain quiet at all times."

"Of course, Miss Margaret. It won't happen again." Claire bowed her head slightly. "I'll go back down to the dining room right away."

"See that you do," Margaret said stiffly.

Claire turned and walked calmly down the hallway, maintaining a steady, measured pace until she turned the corner and descended the service stairs. The moment she reached the privacy of the lower pantry, she collapsed against the wall, her knees shaking so violently she had to catch herself on the shelf.

They were poisoning him. Every single day.

The blue tablet—Solantrex—was an ototoxic medication intended for severe autoimmune inner ear diseases, but given in high, unmonitored doses to a child, it caused temporary, severe auditory nerve depression. Combined with the unknown liquid sedative, it kept Noah in a permanent state of mental fog, rendering him completely unable to speak, process, or respond to his environment.

And Vincent Callahan, the ruthless mafia kingpin who could order a man’s destruction with a single phone call, was completely blind to it because the betrayal was coming from his oldest friend and his most trusted servant.

Claire pulled out her phone. She looked at the video file she had recorded—the video showing Margaret crushing the pill and adding the unknown liquid.

It was strong evidence of improper medicine handling, but it wasn't enough to prove a multi-million-dollar conspiracy to a mob boss. If she went to Vincent now with just this video, Dr. Bell could easily claim the clear drops were simply a prescribed liquid vitamin or a compound prescribed specifically for Noah's condition. Vincent loved Bell like a brother; he would demand medical explanations, and Bell would spin a story that would make Claire look like a paranoid, meddling housekeeper.

And once Bell and Margaret realized Claire was onto them, Claire and Lily would be quietly eliminated. A tragic "accident" for a homeless mother and her daughter would barely register a blip on the news.

Claire looked out the pantry window toward the courtyard.

She needed real, undeniable proof. She needed to trap Bell and Margaret in the act, and more importantly, she needed Vincent to see with his own eyes that his son was not deaf—and that his voice had been stolen from him by the people he trusted most.

Claire wiped a tear from her cheek, her face hardening into an absolute resolve.

She wasn't going to run. She was going to tear their conspiracy apart.
