Chapter 9 - The Trial in the Drawing Room

At 8:30 PM, the grand drawing room of Callahan House was illuminated by the flickering fire of the marble hearth.

Sitting in leather armchairs along the perimeter of the room were the six top bosses of the New York crime syndicates—men who controlled the city's underbelly. They had arrived for their scheduled meeting, but instead found themselves seated as silent witnesses.

At the center of the room stood Dr. Arthur Bell and Margaret Hale.

Both of them were surrounded by four of Vincent’s heaviest enforcers, their escape completely blocked.

Vincent sat in a tall leather chair behind them, holding Noah on his lap. Claire and Lily stood beside them, safe under the direct protection of Frank Vance.

"Vincent, what is the meaning of this?" Dr. Bell demanded, trying to maintain his dignified posture, though sweat was visible on his forehead. "Why are these armed men holding us? I came here to conduct Noah's evening neurological exam!"

"Yes, Arthur," Vincent said smoothly, his voice carrying a terrifying calm. "Let's talk about Noah's neurological exam."

Vincent nodded to Frank.

Frank stepped forward and tossed a thick stack of printed documents onto the coffee table in front of Bell and Margaret.

"That is a certified forensic toxicology report from the state lab," Vincent revealed softly. "It details the exact chemical contents of the milk Margaret gave my son this morning. High doses of Solantrex and heavy sedatives."

Margaret’s face lost every single drop of color. She took an involuntary step back, clutching her leather folder to her chest. "Mr. Callahan... I... I don't know what you're talking about! I only give him what Dr. Bell prescribes!"

"Liars!" Dr. Bell blurted out, turning his rage onto Claire. "It’s her! The new housekeeper! She’s trying to frame us! She’s a street beggar trying to extort money from you, Vincent! You're going to trust a random maid over your oldest friend?"

Vincent didn't raise his voice. He looked at Arthur Bell with eyes that held no remaining humanity for him.

"I didn't trust her at first, Arthur," Vincent said softly. "I trusted you. For four years, I trusted you while you poisoned my child."

Vincent gently looked down at Noah. "Noah, sweetie. Show Dr. Bell what you can do."

Noah looked at his father, then turned toward Arthur Bell and Margaret Hale.

He took a deep breath, stood up on his own two feet, and looked Dr. Bell dead in the eye.

"You are a bad man," Noah said aloud, his voice clear, strong, and resounding through the grand drawing room. "And Miss Margaret is a liar."

A collective gasp swept through the Commission bosses in the room.

Dr. Bell stumbled backward, his knees giving out, hitting the edge of a chair. "No... no... it’s impossible... the auditory nerve was dead..."

"His nerve was fine, Arthur!" Vincent roared, standing up from his chair, his voice echoing off the walls like thunder. "You poisoned his body! You stole four years of my son's life! You made him suffer in silence so you could steal his mother's trust fund!"

Margaret dropped to her knees on the rug, weeping hysterically. "Please, Mr. Callahan! It was Arthur’s idea! He promised me two million dollars! Please don't kill me!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Bell screamed at her, his composure completely shattering into pathetic, desperate panic.

Vincent walked slowly toward Arthur Bell. He didn't pull a gun. He stood over his former friend, looking down at him with absolute disgust.

"Death would be too easy for you, Arthur," Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal promise. "I am going to hand every piece of medical fraud, illegal prescription logging, and child poisoning evidence to the Federal Bureau of Investigation tonight."

Bell’s eyes widened in horror. Federal prison for child poisoning and medical fraud meant a lifetime in maximum security—where a disgraced doctor who harmed a mob boss's child would suffer every single day for the rest of his life.

"And as for your assets," Vincent added softly, looking at Margaret and Bell. "Everything you own, every account, every property, is being seized by my lawyers tonight to fund the Caroline Callahan Children's Auditory Foundation."

Frank stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around Bell’s and Margaret’s wrists, dragging them out of the drawing room as they begged for mercy.

The room returned to a heavy, profound silence.

Don Carmine, the senior New York syndicate boss, stood up from his chair. He looked at Vincent, then looked at Noah, nodding his head in deep respect.

"You handled business, Vincent," Carmine said softly. "Your son is a miracle. Go be a father."
