Chapter 2 - The Stolen Bloodline

Parker moved between Gary and the children, pulling his phone from his suit jacket. "I’m Parker Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Vance. You have five seconds to release that child's arm before I have state marshals sweep this entire block for kidnapping and child endangerment."

Gary looked at Parker's bespoke suit, then at Clare’s fifteen-thousand-dollar shoes, and finally at the sleek Range Rover. Panic flashed across his weathered face. He released Rose’s wrist, stepping back with his hands raised.

"Look, I don't want no trouble," Gary muttered, backing toward his truck. "Some guy paid me five hundred bucks a month to keep 'em fed and out of sight. I didn't steal nobody's kids!"

"Who paid you?" Clare demanded, taking a step toward him. "Name them!"

Gary threw himself into the driver's seat of his truck, slammed the engine into gear, and stomped on the gas, tires screaming as he roared away into the thick afternoon traffic.

Clare didn't chase him. She turned back to the twins. Lily and Rose were trembling, standing barefoot on the burning asphalt, looking up at her with wide, terrified green eyes.

Clare dropped back down to her knees, completely unbothered by the dirt coating her Chanel skirt. She opened her arms slowly, keeping her distance so as not to startle them.

"You're safe now," Clare whispered, tears welling in her eyes again. "No one is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you. I swear it on my life."

Rose looked at her sister, then at Clare’s open arms. "Are... are you an angel?"

Clare let out a tearful laugh, shaking her head. "No, sweet girl. I’m your mama."

Within twenty minutes, three black SUVs from Clare’s private security detail arrived, surrounding the street corner. Clare wrapped both girls in soft cashmere blankets from her car, carrying them directly into the back seat of her Range Rover. She refused to let go of them, holding both tiny, fragile bodies against her chest, breathing in the scent of dirt and cheap soap, silently swearing that the monsters who did this would pay with their lives.

An hour later, they were in the private pediatric wing of St. Jude's Children's Hospital—the very hospital where Clare had been told her baby had died five years ago.

Dr. Franklin, a trusted chief physician completely independent of the hospital's executive board, drew quick-swab DNA samples from Clare, Lily, and Rose.

While the children were given warm baths, clean clothes, and hot meals by gentle nurses in a locked, heavily guarded VIP room, Clare and Parker waited in the physician's private office.

At 7:00 PM, Dr. Franklin stepped into the room, holding a printed lab report. His face was grave, but his eyes were filled with profound shock.

"Clare," Dr. Franklin said, setting the paper on the desk. "It’s a 99.9% DNA match. Lily and Rose are your biological twin daughters."

Clare buried her face in her hands, letting out a long, shuddering breath. Parker squeezed her shoulder tightly.

"There’s something else," Dr. Franklin added softly. "I reviewed the archived delivery records from five years ago. The attending obstetrician who signed your baby’s death certificate was Dr. Aris Thorne."

"Thorne," Clare hissed, her jaw tightening. "My ex-husband’s personal physician."

"Dr. Thorne wasn't just your ex-husband's doctor," Parker revealed, pulling a digital tablet from his briefcase. "Look at the corporate registry filings for Apex Medical Logistics from five years ago. Thorne was a minor shareholder. The majority shareholder was your ex-husband, Julian Lauron."

Clare looked up, her green eyes burning with a dark, terrifying flame.

Julian Lauron—the man who had married her for her family’s billion-dollar shipping empire, the man who had tried to drive her into a psychiatric institution after her 'stillbirth,' and the man who had divorced her three years ago, walking away with a hundred-million-dollar settlement.

"Julian didn't just steal my money," Clare whispered, her voice dripping with lethal coldness. "He stole my babies, hid them in Skid Row, and paid a monster to starve them."

"Why?" Parker asked, brow furrowed. "Why keep them alive at all if he wanted to break you?"

May you like

Clare looked out the window toward the guarded hospital room where her daughters were sleeping peacefully for the first time in their lives.

"Because of the Lauron Family Trust," Clare said softly. "The trust stipulates that if I die without living biological heirs, my entire empire reverts to Julian’s holding company. He needed them alive as a contingency plan... until he was ready to kill me."
