Chapter 4 - The Gala of Ghosts

The grand ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire was bathed in golden chandelier light. Los Angeles high society—billionaires, politicians, corporate titans, and medical elites—mingled in tuxedoes and evening gowns, sipping champagne while classical violins played softly in the background.

At the head table sat Dr. Aris Thorne, looking sleek and distinguished in a bespoke tuxedo, shaking hands with wealthy donors. Beside him sat Julian Lauron—handsome, charismatic, wearing an arrogant smile as he accepted praise for his million-dollar donation to the hospital’s pediatric wing.

"To saving the children," Julian announced, raising his crystal glass to the cheering crowd. "May we always protect the most vulnerable among us."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The classical music faltered as the guests turned to look.

Stepping into the room was Clare Lauron.

She was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk gown that trailed gracefully behind her, custom emerald earrings that matched her eyes, and her dark hair was styled in flawless Hollywood waves. She looked regal, powerful, and utterly indestructible.

Beside her walked Parker Sterling, carrying a slim leather briefcase.

Julian’s smile vanished instantly. His face paled, his glass freezing midway to his lips. Beside him, Dr. Thorne turned ghostly white, his eyes wide with sudden terror.

Clare glided down the center aisle, the crowd parting for her like the Red Sea. She didn't look at the politicians or the heiresses; her eyes were locked onto Julian with a lethal intensity.

"Clare," Julian stammered, standing up from his chair, trying to recover his charming mask. "What... what a pleasant surprise. We didn't expect you tonight."

"I’m sure you didn't, Julian," Clare said, her clear, melodious voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "After all, you thought I was home weeping over a grave you dug for me."

Dr. Thorne stood up, his voice trembling. "Mrs. Lauron, this is a private charity event—"

"Shut your mouth, Aris," Clare commanded calmly, not even glancing at him.

She stepped onto the main stage, picking up the microphone from the podium. The gala organizers tried to move toward her, but four of Clare’s massive private security guards stepped in front of the stage, blocking them effortlessly.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Clare said into the microphone, her voice cool and steady. "Tonight, my ex-husband, Julian Lauron, and Dr. Aris Thorne invited you here to donate money to save children. But I think you all deserve to see where their true expertise lies."

Clare gestured to Parker.

Parker pressed a remote control in his hand. The massive projection screen behind the stage—which had been displaying the hospital’s logo—instantly switched.

A high-definition image filled the screen.

It was a photograph taken six hours earlier: two barefoot, filthy five-year-old girls in faded pink dresses, pushing a rusted shopping cart through the trash of Skid Row.

The ballroom gasped. Whispers erupted across the tables.

"Five years ago," Clare declared, her voice ringing with absolute power, "Dr. Thorne signed a forged death certificate claiming my newborn daughter died at birth. Tonight, I stand before you as the mother of Lily and Rose Lauron—my biological twin daughters, whom Julian Lauron stole from my womb, hid in Skid Row, and starved for five years so he could steal my family trust!"
