Chapter 4 - The Shadow Protocol

Natalie woke with a pounding headache and the taste of metallic copper in her mouth.

She was sitting in an iron chair inside a damp, windowless basement room that smelled of mildew and stale gasoline. Her hands were bound behind her back with heavy zip-ties, biting painfully into her wrists.

Sitting across from her on a wooden crate was Julian Rossi, casually tossing a switchblade into the air and catching it by the pearl handle. Standing near the single iron door were three men in leather jackets, carrying automatic handguns.

"Good, you're awake," Julian said, flicking the knife open with a sharp clack. "I was worried my boys overdid the anesthetic."

"Julian," Natalie rasped, her throat burning. "Damian will kill you for this."

Julian burst into a loud, mocking laugh. "Damian is currently being detained by the FBI at the federal building in downtown Chicago. Turns out, someone leaked twenty years of warehouse shipping manifests to the U.S. Attorney’s office an hour ago."

Natalie’s heart plummeted. "You set him up."

"I saved the family," Julian corrected, his eyes gleaming with unhinged ambition. "Damian went soft. Ever since his wife died, he’s been talking about 'legitimizing' the syndicate. Turning us into a boring logistics company. Do you know how much money we make off illegal firearms and un-taxed pharmaceuticals coming through those docks, little girl? Tens of millions a month."

He stood up, walking toward her with the blade gleaming in his hand.

"Damian thought he could push me out," Julian continued, tilting her chin up with the cold flat side of the blade. "He thought he could hide behind his autistic freak of a daughter and play happy family. But now he’s in a federal holding cell, and I hold the leverage."

"Ava is a child!" Natalie spat, pulling her head back from the knife. "She has nothing to do with this!"

"She has everything to do with this," Julian sneered. "Damian will sign over control of the DeLuca trust and the board seats of the transport company within twenty-four hours to ensure I don't send you and his daughter back to him in cardboard boxes."

"Ava isn't here," Natalie realized, watching his eyes. "You don't have her."

Julian’s smile darkened into a snarl. "Not yet. But my team is moving on the estate tonight. With Damian locked up by the feds, his security detail will crumble. And you... you are going to call Marco on this phone and tell him you left your bag inside the estate gate so my boys can slip through the side entrance."

He pulled out Natalie’s phone and thrust it toward her face.

"I won't do it," Natalie said, looking him straight in the eyes. "Kill me if you want. I won't help you hurt Ava."

Julian’s face twisted in rage. He raised his hand to strike her—

Suddenly, the lights in the basement went out completely.

darkness engulfed the room.

"What the hell?" one of the guards shouted. "Check the breaker!"

A heavy, muffled thud echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the sound of a body hitting concrete. Then, absolute silence.

"Frank? Frank!" Julian yelled, pulling out a heavy black pistol from his jacket. "Get your guns up!"

The heavy iron door was suddenly ripped open with a horrifying screech of twisting metal. High-intensity tactical red lights flooded the dark basement.

Before the guards could raise their weapons, three muffled gunshots rang out in rapid succession—suppressed gunfire. The three guards dropped to the floor instantly, incapacitated before they could even scream.

Julian panicked, grabbing Natalie from behind and pointing his pistol at her temple. "Who’s there?! I’ll blow her brain out! I swear to God!"

Out of the red fog in the doorway stepped a single figure.

He didn't wear a uniform. He wore a dark leather coat, covered in rain. His face was cold, illuminated by the red tactical light, his eyes gleaming like polished flint.

Damian DeLuca.

"You're late for our meeting, Julian," Damian said softly.

Julian trembled violently, pulling Natalie tighter against him. "How... how are you out?! The FBI held you!"

"The U.S. Attorney is on my payroll, Julian," Damian said, stepping calmly into the room, his suppressed pistol resting casually at his side. "I knew you were leaking documents two weeks ago. I gave you those manifests. I wanted to see how far you would go."

"Stay back!" Julian screamed, pressing the barrel of the gun deep into Natalie’s temple. "I’ll kill her! I swear I’ll kill her!"

Natalie looked at Damian. She didn't see panic in his eyes. She saw a terrifying, supreme confidence.

"Julian," Damian whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "Look at your chest."

Julian looked down. A small red laser dot was hovering precisely over his heart.

"Marco is on the roof with a sniper rifle," Damian said. "If your finger moves three millimeters on that trigger, your heart will explode before your brain can process the command."

Julian swallowed hard, sweat pouring down his face. "Damian... please... we were brothers..."

"Brothers don't touch what belongs to me," Damian said.

In a fraction of a second, Damian stepped forward, grabbed Julian’s wrist, and twisted it violently upward. A sickening snap echoed through the room as Julian’s wrist shattered. Julian shrieked in agony, dropping the gun.

Damian spun Julian around, slammed his face into the concrete wall, and swept his leg out, sending the traitor collapsing to the floor in a heap of tears and blood.

Damian didn't even give Julian a second glance. He immediately turned to Natalie, pulling a switchblade from his pocket and slicing through her zip-ties in a single smooth motion.

"Are you hurt?" Damian asked, his voice suddenly transforming from lethal icy coldness to desperate, trembling concern. He took her face in his broad hands, scanning her skin for any sign of injury. "Did he touch you?"

"I’m okay," Natalie sobbed, the adrenaline finally washing out of her system as she collapsed against his chest. "I’m okay. Damian, he wanted Ava..."

"I know," Damian whispered, wrapping his arms fiercely around her, holding her so tight she could feel the thunderous pounding of his heart against her ribs. "Ava is safe. She’s at a secure safehouse with Marco’s team. You’re safe now, Natalie. I’m here."
