Chapter 5 - The Bloodline War

The aftermath of Julian’s betrayal sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld.
Damian did not execute Julian immediately. Instead, he stripped him of his rank, confiscated his assets, and presented him to the Commission—the governing council of the city's seven major crime families—as a traitor who had attempted to sell out syndicate operations to federal authorities.
By the laws of the street, Julian’s life was forfeited. He was vanished into the dark underbelly of the city, never to be heard from again.
However, the betrayal exposed a deeper, more dangerous problem: Julian had not acted alone.
He had been backed by the Moretti family—the old rivals who had assassinated Damian’s father twenty years prior. Don Vincenzo Moretti, an eighty-year-old patriarch operating out of Cicero, saw Damian’s shift toward legitimate corporate enterprises as a sign of weakness and an opportunity to seize control of the lucrative Great Lakes shipping corridors.
For the next two months, Chicago became a quiet warzone.
There were no massive shootouts in the streets; Damian’s war was fought through economic assassination, intercepted shipments, tactical raids on illegal casinos, and surgical strikes.
Through it all, the DeLuca estate was put on level-four lockdown.
Natalie, Ava, and Mrs. Vance remained within the estate grounds, protected by double security details. Yet, despite the invisible storm raging outside, inside the mansion, a profound transformation was taking place.
Natalie became the anchor of the household. She kept Ava grounded through structured lessons, creative play, and daily music therapy. But she also became Damian’s sanctuary.
Every night when Damian returned to the estate—often exhausted, carrying the invisible scent of gunpowder and rain—he did not retreat to his private wing. He went to the conservatory where Natalie was waiting.
One late midnight, after a particularly brutal day where three of Damian’s warehouses had been raided by Moretti’s enforcers, Damian sat on the sofa in the dimly lit conservatory. His tie was loosened, his jacket discarded, and his eyes were dark with heavy exhaustion.
Natalie walked in carrying a tray with warm tea and light sandwiches. She set it down on the low glass table and sat beside him.
Without a word, Damian laid his head back against the sofa cushions and closed his eyes.
"It’s almost over," Damian whispered softly.
"Moretti?" Natalie asked, gently reaching out and running her fingers through his dark hair.
Damian leaned into her touch, a soft sigh escaping his lips. "Moretti lost his three primary distribution hubs tonight. His captains are surrendering. By next week, the Moretti syndicate will cease to exist in Chicago."
"And then?" Natalie asked softly. "Will you finally be free?"
Damian opened his eyes and looked up at her. In the soft moonlight filtering through the conservatory’s glass roof, his dark eyes were filled with an emotion so raw and intense that Natalie’s breath caught in her throat.
"I will never be completely free of my past, Natalie," Damian said, reaching up to gently touch her face. "But for the first time in my life, I see a future I actually want to live for. A future that isn't built on blood or fear."
"Damian..." Natalie whispered.
He pulled her down slowly toward him. When his lips met hers, it wasn't a fierce or terrifying kiss. It was deep, tender, and desperate with months of unspoken desire. Natalie wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth, feeling the strength of his shoulders and the gentle precision of his mouth against hers.
When he broke the kiss, his forehead rested against hers.
"I fell in love with you the day you turned off that spotlight in the boutique," Damian whispered against her skin. "When you chose to protect my daughter when the rest of the world saw her as a nuisance."
Tears pricked Natalie’s eyes. "I love you too, Damian. I have for a long time."
A quiet knock at the conservatory door interrupted them. Marco stood outside, looking discreetly down at the floor.
"Boss," Marco said quietly. "Don Moretti just called a truce meeting. He wants to meet at neutral ground tomorrow night at the Palmer House Hotel to sign the asset surrender documents."
Damian’s posture immediately straightened, his eyes turning cold and calculating once more. "Who is attending from his side?"
May you like
"Just Moretti and his personal counsel," Marco replied. "He knows he’s beaten, Damian. He wants to retire to Florida in exchange for handing over his commercial real estate portfolio."
Damian nodded slowly. "Prepare the convoy for tomorrow night. But double the guard around Natalie and Ava. Moretti is an old snake. Old snakes bite hardest before they die."
