Chapter 3 — The Name on the Paper

The envelope shook slightly in Margaret’s hands when she finally took it.
Not because of emotion.
Because she already knew something was inside it she didn’t want to see.
Philip tried to grab it first.
I stopped him with one sentence.
“If you touch it before she opens it, I will call the attorney who froze your accounts.”
That froze him completely.
Margaret tore it open.
She unfolded the document slowly.
Too slowly.
Like delaying truth could change it.
Her eyes scanned the page.
Once.
Then again.
Then stopped.
The color drained from her face so completely it looked like she had aged ten years in ten seconds.
Philip leaned in.
“Mom? What does it say?”
She didn’t answer.
So I did.
“Thomas requested genetic confirmation after your insistence that I was ‘not suitable for the family lineage.’”
Margaret’s lips parted.
“No…”
I nodded slightly.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And he left instructions that if anything happened to him, the result was to be reviewed before any inheritance distribution.”
Philip snatched the paper from her hands.
Read it.
Then froze.
Because the words were simple.
Unmistakable.
Final.
PATERNITY RESULT: EXCLUDED
Philip looked up slowly.
“…this is fake.”
I tilted my head.
“From the same lab your own lawyers use.”
Silence.
Margaret whispered:
“…whose child is it?”
I stepped back toward the house.
My hand rested lightly on the doorframe.
Then I answered.
“You don’t get to know that yet.”
I looked at both of them.
“Because you didn’t come here as family.”
May you like
A pause.
“You came here as beneficiaries.”
