Chapter 5 — The Child They Didn’t See

From inside the house, a soft cry broke the tension.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just real.

My son.

Margaret froze instantly.

Her entire expression shifted.

Not calculation anymore.

Instinct.

“Let me see him,” she said quickly.

I didn’t move.

“You don’t get to walk into his life like nothing happened.”

Philip’s voice sharpened.

“Blair, that child is Miller blood. You don’t get to—”

I interrupted him coldly.

“He almost died in the parking lot of your husband’s funeral while you told me to call a taxi.”

Silence fell like a weight.

Even Margaret flinched.

I stepped closer to the door.

“And now you want access?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

A pause.

“Access is something you earn before the emergency.”

I turned slightly.

My voice dropped.

“You already used yours up.”

Inside, the baby cried again.

I didn’t rush.

I didn’t panic.

I simply stood between him and them.

And for the first time…

Margaret realized something she hadn’t before.

She wasn’t in control of this situation.

Not even close.
