CHAPTER 3 — The House That Was Never Mine

I walked through the side door into my own mansion.

Every step felt wrong.

The floors I paid for.

The walls I built.

The lights I installed with my own overtime money.

And yet I felt like a stranger walking into someone else’s lie.

The dining room was full.

Wine glasses.

Gold cutlery.

Guests in expensive suits.

People laughing too loudly, like they were performing happiness.

And there, at the head of the table, sat my mother’s friend group like queens in stolen territory.

When they saw me, the room didn’t go quiet.

It went curious.

Like I was an interruption.

My mother rushed in behind me.

“Oh, everyone—this is just my son. He arrived unexpectedly.”

Just my son.

Not the man who paid for everything.

Not the reason this house existed.

Just a detail.

Prudence leaned close to her and whispered something.

My mother nodded quickly.

Then turned to me.

“You should freshen up before joining the guests.”

I laughed once.

It came out empty.

“You turned my wife into a servant,” I said.

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

My mother lowered her voice.

“We’ve taken care of them. Don’t embarrass us.”

That was when I realized something terrifying.

They didn’t think they had done anything wrong.

They thought I was the problem for noticing.
