CHAPTER 7 — The Man Who Finally Came Home

Police arrived forty minutes later.

Not because I called them immediately.

But because I sent everything.

Bank fraud records.

Audio files.

Witness statements.

Five years of financial movement patterns.

And one final message:

“This is not a family dispute. This is systematic exploitation.”

As officers entered the house, my mother finally broke her composure.

“You would destroy your own family?”

I looked at her.

For the first time in five years, I didn’t feel like her son.

“I did not destroy this family,” I said quietly. “You did.”

Prudence was taken first.

Still screaming excuses.

Still denying everything.

My mother followed next.

But before she left, she turned to me one last time.

“You will regret this,” she whispered.

I shook my head.

“No,” I said. “The only thing I regret is trusting you longer than I should have.”

Outside, Sarah held Jamie tightly.

For the first time, he wasn’t afraid to touch me.

He ran into my arms.

And I held him like I was making up for every second I had been gone.

Sarah stood beside us.

Quiet.

Tired.

But no longer invisible.

I looked at the mansion behind us.

The house I built.

The house they turned into a cage.

Then I said the only thing that mattered anymore:

“We’re starting over.”

And this time…

no one was getting left behind.
