Chapter 4 - The Mansion's New Dawn

Forty-eight hours later, I brought Claire home.
She didn't return in a staff van, nor was she wearing the grey linen housekeeper's uniform. She was sitting in the front passenger seat of my SUV, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and trousers that Arthur’s wife had personally delivered to her hospital room.
As we pulled up the long, winding driveway toward the stone mansion, Claire stared out the window, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"Julian," she murmured, her voice still somewhat fragile. "Are you sure about this? The press is already asking questions about Eleanor’s lawsuit. Having me stay in the main house... it will only stir up more rumors."
"Let them talk," I said firmly, bringing the vehicle to a stop right in front of the grand entrance. "This is your home now, Claire. Not as an employee, but as my family."
When I opened the front door, the entire household staff was assembled in the foyer. At the head of the line stood Ruth, her hands wringing nervously against her white apron, her face pale with embarrassment and anxiety.
Claire stepped into the foyer behind me. Upon seeing the staff, she instinctively shrank back, used to taking her place at the back of the line.
I reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder, and guided her forward to stand beside me.
"Ruth," I said, my voice stern but calm.
The head housekeeper stepped forward, her eyes fixed on the floor. "Mr. Whitmore... I have already packed my bags. I understand if you wish to terminate my employment immediately for giving Claire that medication without authorization."
Silence stretched across the grand marble foyer. I looked at Ruth. She was a stern, rigid woman who had served my family for ten years, but she was not inherently cruel—she was a product of the cold, corporate structure I myself had established in this house.
Before I could speak, Claire stepped forward.
"Ruth," Claire said softly, reaching out to touch the older woman's hands. "You gave me that pill because you saw I was in pain and you were worried about me. You were wrong to do it, but I know you didn't mean to hurt me. Julian, please don't fire her."
Ruth looked up, her eyes wide with shock, tears instantly brimming on her lashes. "Claire... after how hard I worked you?"
"You didn't know," Claire said gently. "None of you knew."
I looked around at the gathered staff—the maids, the cooks, the groundskeepers. They were all staring at Claire with a mix of awe and profound shame.
"Ruth will remain as head housekeeper," I announced, my voice carrying across the hall. "But effective immediately, the rules of this estate are changed. There will be no more sixteen-hour shifts. No one works through illness. And Claire Bennett is no longer a member of the domestic staff. She is my sister-in-law, and she will be treated with the exact same respect as Evelyn was."
"Yes, Mr. Whitmore," Ruth whispered, bowing her head deeply. "Thank you... thank you, Claire."
"Where is Aunt Claire's room?" Lucas's voice piped up from the top of the grand staircase.
The boys came tumbling down the stairs, their shoes sliding on the polished wood. Owen carried a large, hand-drawn poster that read: WELCOME HOME AUNT CLAIRE! in bright, messy crayon letters.
Claire dropped to her knees, laughing through her tears as the boys threw their arms around her neck, tackling her into a warm hug right on the marble floor.
"We cleaned the big guest room on the second floor!" Owen announced proudly. "The one with the balcony that looks at the rose garden!"
"That's Mommy's favorite garden," Lucas added softly, looking at Claire. "We put the star music box on your nightstand so you can play it before bed."
Claire pulled the boys close, burying her face in their hair, her shoulders shaking with silent, release-filled sobs. I stood beside them, looking down at the small, beautiful family unit forming from the ashes of our shared grief.
For the first time since Evelyn died, the cold, silent mansion felt alive.
Later that evening, after the boys were tucked into bed, I walked down to the estate’s private library. The room was dark, lit only by the warm glow of a desk lamp. I opened my laptop and began reviewing the financial documents Arthur had sent over regarding Vance Global.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Claire stepped inside, holding two steaming mugs of chamomile tea. She looked rested, her hair flowing freely over her shoulders.
"Thought you might need this," she said, placing a mug on my desk.
"Thank you," I smiled, leaning back in my chair. "How are the boys?"
"Fast asleep," Claire replied, a tender smile touching her lips. "Owen made me promise we would bake chocolate chip pancakes at seven in the morning sharp."
"He holds people to his pancake promises," I chuckled.
Claire sat down in the leather armchair across from my desk. Her expression turned serious as her eyes landed on the financial charts on my screen. "What are you doing, Julian?"
"Eleanor isn't going to stop with legal petitions, Claire," I said, my tone hardening. "She’s launching a proxy war against Whitmore Enterprises. She’s trying to convince my board of directors that I am emotionally compromised and unfit to serve as CEO."
Claire’s eyes flashed with worry. "Can she do that?"
"She controls thirty percent of our supply chain through Vance Global subsidiaries," I explained. "If she pulls those contracts, our stock will plummet twenty percent overnight. But I found something in Evelyn's old personal records."
I turned the laptop screen toward her.
"When Evelyn died," I continued, "she left a sealed trust that Eleanor was supposed to manage until the boys turned twenty-five. But Arthur discovered a hidden clause. If Eleanor attempts to initiate legal hostilities against Evelyn's direct heirs, the trust automatically liquidates Eleanor's voting shares in Vance Global and transfers them directly to..."
I paused, looking Claire straight in the eye.
"...to Evelyn's surviving blood sister."
May you like
Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Me?"
"Yes," I said softly. "You don't just hold the key to the boys' hearts, Claire. You hold the controlling interest in the entire Vance empire."
